Chapter 5 - Locked In

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate's private study stood slightly ajar, casting a wedge of weak afternoon light across the polished hardwood floors of the grand hallway. Leo pushed them open with the flat of his hand, his muscles coiled and ready for a physical confrontation, but the room was completely empty. Dust motes drifted lazily through the shaft of sunlight illuminating the mahogany desk, where a heavy iron floor safe sat embedded in the corner beneath a large, oil-painted family portrait.
"Stay right here by the doorway, both of you," Leo instructed in a harsh, low whisper, gesturing for Sarah and Lily to remain in the hallway where they had a clear line of sight to the open courtyard windows.
"Leo, this is insane," Sarah hissed, clutching Toby tightly against her chest as the infant let out a soft, restless sigh in his sleep. "Why are we coming in here? What could possibly be in that safe that these people want? You told me you liquidated all your business assets before we moved out of the city!"
"I thought I did," Leo replied grimly, dropping to one knee in front of the heavy iron door of the safe. His large, calloused fingers brushed over the brushed steel electronic keypad, noting immediately that the digital display was dark, completely bypassed by a manual override cylinder that had been drilled out with surgical precision. "Whoever is behind this didn't want my money, Sarah. They wanted access to the archives."
Lily peeked around the doorframe, her big, clear eyes wide with fearful curiosity. "Daddy, is that the box where you keep the old photo albums? The ones from when you worked at the university laboratory?"
"No, Lily, it's just old paperwork," Leo lied smoothly, though his voice betrayed a subtle tremor that didn't escape Sarah's sharp observation.
He inserted his thumb and forefinger into the recessed latch of the heavy steel door and pulled. With a heavy, metallic groan, the safe door swung open, revealing a sparse interior that held no stacks of cash, no jewelry, and no photo albums. Instead, resting neatly on the felt-lined floor of the safe, sat a single, antiquated black-and-silver hard drive encased in a ruggedized military-grade housing, wired directly to a blinking amber backup relay light.
Sarah gasped, stepping past the threshold despite Leo's warning. "Is that... is that the primary data core from Project Vanguard? I thought you destroyed that drive six years ago after the facility fire!"
"I was told it was destroyed," Leo corrected her through clenched teeth, his face draining of all color as he stared down at the small, unassuming metal box that held the key to his darkest past.
Before either of them could reach for the drive, the heavy mahogany study doors suddenly slammed shut with a thunderous, resounding crash that rattled the picture frames on the walls. Leo lunged forward and threw his weight against the wood, turning the brass door handle, but it spun uselessly in his grip. The automated smart-locks had engaged with a brutal, definitive finality, sealing them completely inside the room.

From the ceiling ventilation vent directly above their heads, a sudden, sharp hiss of compressed air broke the silence, followed immediately by the unmistakable, sweet chemical scent of medical-grade halothane gas.
