Chapter 3 - The Digital Shadow

The courtyard suddenly felt suffocatingly cold, despite the blistering summer heat radiating off the ancient stone pavers. Leo clutched baby Toby tightly against his chest, the infant’s skin burning with a dangerous fever, but his own blood ran ice cold at Sarah’s words. He shifted his heavy gaze from his son's pale face toward the cracked, dark glass of the SUV's central infotainment screen. Beneath a layer of dust and spiderweb fractures, the dashboard monitor flickered stubbornly to life, displaying a single, chilling stream of text that scrolled across the black background without any human input.
"What do you mean, an external IP address?" Leo demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, controlled register that masked the sheer panic threatening to consume him. "That's impossible. The vehicle's onboard cellular network was disabled during the last software update to prevent tracking."
"That's what the dealership told us," Sarah breathed, her fingers tracing the baby's tiny, sweat-drenched curls as she backed away from the vehicle as if it were a living venomous creature. "Look at the routing logs on the screen, Leo. Someone didn't just lock us out by chance. They overrode the manual override pins remotely from a local relay station."
Lily tugged urgently at the hem of Leo's black shirt, her wide, tear-filled eyes darting anxiously around the massive, sunlit courtyard. "Daddy, why is that black van parked by the iron gates? It's been sitting there with its engine running the whole time we were talking by the fountain."
Leo snapped his head around. Across the manicured lawn, near the grand wrought-iron entrance gates of the estate, a nondescript dark commercial van sat idling in the shadows of the sycamore trees. Its tinted windshield reflected the blinding glare of the afternoon sun, making it impossible to see if anyone was sitting behind the wheel, but the heavy exhaust billowing from its tailpipe proved the engine had been running hot for quite some time.
"Stay here with Sarah," Leo instructed in a low, unwavering tone, gently transferring the still-gasping baby into his wife's trembling arms.
"Leo, no! Don't leave us!" Sarah cried out, clutching Toby to her chest while grabbing the fabric of Leo’s vest with her free hand. "That vehicle could be connected to whoever hacked the car! We need to call the authorities right now, not go walking toward strangers!"
"We don't have cellular service," Leo said grimly, holding up his phone to reveal a completely dead screen stripped of all signal bars. "The moment the car's system fried, our phones dropped off the local tower. The entire perimeter has been jammed by a high-frequency signal repeater."
Without waiting for another protest, Leo turned on his heel and broke into a determined, heavy jog across the open stone courtyard, his jaw set in a hard line of absolute fury. The gravel crunched loudly beneath his boots as he closed the distance toward the idling van, his eyes locked onto the tinted driver-side window. As he reached the rear quarter panel, the van's transmission engaged with a heavy, mechanical clunk, and the vehicle suddenly lurched backward, spinning its tires on the loose gravel in a frantic attempt to flee.

Leo lunged forward, his muscular arms grabbing the top edge of the van’s rear door just as it accelerated, dragging him across the courtyard pavement before the tires found traction. With a violent wrench, he ripped the back doors of the van wide open, revealing an interior packed not with people, but with glowing server racks, flashing diagnostic monitors, and a live video feed streaming footage of his own frantic face.
