Chapter 1 - The Sound of Breaking

The sharp, jagged edges of safety glass sparkled under the harsh afternoon sun, raining down like glittering diamonds onto the scorching asphalt of the courtyard. Leo pulled his bleeding, lacerated hand back from the frame of the black SUV, his chest heaving as adrenaline flooded his bloodstream. His knuckles were raw and torn, dark crimson droplets mixing with the dust of the driveway, but he felt no pain. Inside the suffocating, sun-baked interior of the luxury vehicle, the faint, desperate whimpers of the trapped infant pierced through the roaring in his ears. Beside the wreckage of the window, seven-year-old Lily stood frozen in her pink dress, her toy stethoscope dangling uselessly from her neck as silent tears cut clean tracks through the dust on her flushed cheeks.
"Step back, Lily! Right now! Move!" Leo barked, his voice cracking with a terrifying mixture of command and raw, suffocating panic.
Across the wide stone courtyard, Sarah stood paralyzed, her knuckles white as she squeezed the electronic car key fob so hard the plastic casing creaked in her grip. Her tailored white blazer fluttered in the hot summer breeze, framing a face drained of all color, her eyes wide with mounting horror as she stared at the shattered door.
"I pressed the button, Leo! I swear to God I pressed the unlock button twice!" Sarah screamed, her voice fracturing into a hysterical shriek that echoed off the towering brick walls of the grand estate. "The system malfunctioned! The electronics are completely dead! Nothing is responding!"
Leo didn't waste a single breath arguing. His dark, wavy hair clung to his sweat-soaked forehead as he ignored the pooling blood on his hands and thrust his arm deep through the jagged opening of the driver-side window. The cabin air hit him like a physical blow—an overwhelming wall of toxic, oven-like heat that trapped the scent of melting plastic and stale air.
"You should have checked the manual override before we stepped away to talk!" Leo snapped back, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his bearded cheek. "You never trusted the smart-lock system on this foreign import, Sarah, and yet you insisted on bringing the baby out here in this heat!"
"Don't you dare put this on me!" Sarah fired back, taking a frantic step forward, her high heels clicking sharply against the ancient stones. "You were the one who rushed us out the door because your business call was running late! If you hadn't been screaming into your phone about quarterly projections, we would have packed the diaper bag properly!"
"Stop fighting, both of you! Please, just get him out! He's turning blue!" Lily cried out, her small hands flying to her face as she watched the tiny bundle in the rear-facing car seat slump dangerously to the side.

Leo plunged his upper body halfway through the broken window frame, stretching his muscular frame to its absolute physical limit, his fingers brushing against the safety straps of the infant seat just as the baby let out one final, agonizing gasp.
