Chapter 2 - The Silent Passenger

Leo’s thick fingers fumbled frantically against the stubborn red plastic release buckle of the infant car seat, his vision blurring from the intense, trapped heat radiating off the leather upholstery. The air inside the luxury SUV felt thick enough to chew, a suffocating microclimate where temperatures had easily spiked past one hundred and twenty degrees in a matter of minutes. Every second felt stretched into an eternity as he fought against the awkward angle of his body, half-hanging through the jagged, glass-strewn window frame.
"I can't get the latch to release!" Leo yelled back over his shoulder, his voice straining until the veins in his thick neck stood out like thick cords. "The plastic must have warped from the thermal expansion! Hand me the pocket knife from the center console pocket, Sarah! Quick!"
Sarah stumbled forward, her designer white blazer catching on the sharp edges of the broken glass before she managed to wrench herself free. Her hands trembled so violently she dropped the small metallic tool twice onto the hot pavement before finally scooping it up and thrusting it blindly toward him. Her face was an absolute mask of terror, her lips pale and trembling as she stared past Leo’s broad shoulders into the dim interior of the back seat.
"Just cut the straps if you have to! Do whatever it takes!" Sarah sobbed, her composure completely shattering as she watched their infant son, six-month-old Toby, resting limply against the padded headrest.
Lily stood by the front fender, clutching her toy stethoscope so tightly the plastic tubing wrapped around her small knuckles, cutting off the circulation. She wasn't crying out loud anymore; instead, she was breathing in shallow, terrified gasps, her young mind struggling to comprehend the fragility of life she had only ever pretended to fix in her games.
With a fierce, guttural growl fueled by pure paternal desperation, Leo jammed the blade of the pocket knife into the jammed housing of the buckle and pried upward with all his might. With a sharp, metallic snap, the heavy plastic gave way, releasing the tension. Leo instantly scooped the tiny, overheated infant into his massive arms, pulling him backward through the window opening just as the boy let out a weak, pathetic whimper.
"I've got him. I've got him, buddy," Leo whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged sob as he pressed his ear against Toby's damp, burning chest.
Sarah reached out with trembling arms to take her son, but as she pulled the baby close, her eyes locked onto a small, blinking red LED light embedded deep within the dashboard console that was still glowing faintly through the smoke of the fried electrical system.

"Leo," Sarah whispered, her voice dropping to a horrifying, deadened pitch that cut through the afternoon air like a knife. "Look at the dashboard screen. We didn't leave the keys in the ignition by accident. The car was remotely locked from an external IP address."
