Chapter 9

By noon, the grey skies had opened up into a steady, cold drizzle that slicked the asphalt of the estate’s circular driveway. Two unmarked federal vehicles and a local child services van pulled through the wrought-iron gates, their tires hissing against the wet pavement. Clara sat in the front passenger seat of Arthur’s car, her hands tightly gripping the black binder, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Arthur turned off the engine, looking over at her with a steady, encouraging nod. "Stay in the vehicle until I signal," he instructed softly. Clara watched as federal marshals in tactical vests and windbreakers stepped out into the rain, moving with practiced efficiency toward the double oak doors of the mansion. Moments later, the front door swung open. Julian stood in the entryway, flanked by private security guards, his navy blue suit immaculate, his expression a mask of arrogant disbelief. He was shouting protests about search warrants and jurisdictional errors, demanding to speak to his corporate attorneys. Behind him, Victoria peeked out from the formal living room, her blonde hair slightly disheveled, her red dress looking completely out of place amid the grim reality of federal law enforcement. The lead marshal stepped past Julian, flashing a federal indictment and a protective custody order signed by Judge Harrison. Within minutes, social workers escorted Lily and Maya out of the house. The two girls wore raincoats over their pajamas, their dark curls bouncing as they hurried down the stone steps, looking around in bewilderment until Maya spotted Clara’s sedan parked near the edge of the circular drive. "Mommy!" Maya screamed, breaking away from the social worker and splashing through the puddles toward the car. Clara didn't wait for Arthur’s signal. She pushed the car door open, rushing out into the cold rain to drop to her knees as her daughters threw their arms around her neck. The warmth of their embrace washed away days of terror, exhaustion, and grief. She held them tight, burying her face in their damp hair, tears mixing freely with the relentless drizzle. Across the courtyard, Julian watched from the doorway, his hands cuffed behind his back by the marshals, his sharp jawline locked in a silent snarl of absolute defeat as he was led toward the back of a federal cruiser.
