Chapter 2

Arthur’s silver hair caught the fading light as he lowered the black binder, his expression a mix of profound sorrow and quiet resolve. He looked from Julian, whose breathing had grown shallow and rapid, back to Clara, whose cheek still throbbed from the blow. The modern mansion behind them—a monument to glass, steel, and accumulated wealth—suddenly felt less like a home and more like a carefully constructed prison. Arthur stepped closer to Clara, his grey suit brushing against her white blouse, shielding her from Julian’s venomous glare. "Enough, Julian," Arthur said, his voice carrying the weathered authority of a man who had built empires only to watch them rot from the inside. "The paperwork is already filed. You cannot simply rewrite a decade of birth certificates and joint tax returns because it suits your new life with Victoria." Victoria remained seated in the black sedan, her high heels tapping an impatient rhythm against the floor mats, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, entirely detached from the human collateral damage unfolding outside. Julian took a step forward, his fists clenched at his sides, ready to bully his way out of the corner he had backed himself into. But Arthur stood firm, holding the family photo aloft like an ancient talisman. Clara looked down at the image of her daughters, Lily and Maya. Where were they right now? The terrifying realization hit her with the force of a physical blow; Julian hadn’t just locked her out of the estate; he had isolated the girls, perhaps even told them some monstrous fabrication about where their mother had gone. She looked up at Julian, seeing not the charming man she had married during their struggling twenties, but a stranger sculpted entirely by greed and corporate paranoia. "Where are my children, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice dangerously quiet, devoid of the earlier panic. It was the tone of a mother who had nothing left to lose. Julian sneered, attempting to regain his footing. "You have no legal standing here, Emily. The court will see it my way." Clara’s eyes narrowed. The use of that name—Emily Bennett—was the linchpin of his entire strategy. He had manufactured a ghost to replace her, utilizing forged documents and corrupted legal channels. But Arthur was holding the original archives, the tangible artifacts that no corrupt judge could easily dismiss. The older man gave Clara a subtle, reassuring nod, pressing the heavy binder back into her trembling arms. The battle for her children was no longer just a domestic dispute; it was a war for her very existence.
