Chapter 6

The wall safe was concealed behind an oversized oil painting of a nineteenth-century maritime disaster—a fitting metaphor for Julian’s current moral trajectory. Clara swung the heavy canvas aside, revealing the digital keypad glowing with a faint blue luminescence in the darkened study. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, breathing in slowly to calm her racing pulse, then punched in Maya’s birthday combined with the year they had first met in college. The LED display blinked red, emitting a low, warning beep. Two attempts left. She paused, remembering an offhand comment Julian had made during their honeymoon about the only date that truly mattered to him—the day he closed his first major corporate acquisition. She entered those four digits, followed by the number of their first apartment. With a satisfying mechanical clunk, the heavy steel door of the safe swung outward on well-oiled hinges. Inside sat a stack of passports, digital hard drives encased in black silicone, and a thick velvet ledger. Clara’s hands moved with practiced speed, gathering the drives and sliding them into the deep pockets of her trench coat. She pulled out the velvet ledger, flipping it open to find handwritten notes detailing the systematic asset-stripping and the names of the corrupt officials who had helped fabricate the legal identity of Emily Bennett. "Looking for your souvenirs?" A smooth, chilling voice cut through the silence of the room. Clara spun around. Julian stood in the doorway, casually leaning against the doorframe wearing a silk bathrobe, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He wasn't surprised; he looked almost amused, as if he had been watching her on a security monitor the entire time. "You’re trespassing in your own home, Emily," Julian said, the fabricated name dripping with condescension as he took a slow sip of his drink. "Or whatever it is you think you are these days." Clara gripped the velvet ledger tightly, refusing to shrink under his gaze. "I am Clara Bennett, Julian. And no amount of forged paperwork or bought judgeship can erase the truth. The police already have copies of these financial records." Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the glass in his hand trembling ever so slightly before he recovered his composure. He pushed off the doorframe, closing the distance between them with slow, predatory steps. "You think Arthur is going to save you? Arthur is a relic, Clara. He’ll be bought out by morning, and you will be nothing more than a ghost wandering the streets with no legal right to look at your own children." Clara didn’t back away. She stood her ground, her eyes locking onto his with a fierce, unwavering intensity that made Julian hesitate just inches away from her. The power dynamic in the room shifted; for all his control and fabricated identities, Julian was looking at a woman who had nothing left to lose, and that made her infinitely more dangerous than any corporate rival he had ever faced.
