Chapter 4

Arthur’s downtown office was a fortress of mahogany and dark leather, smelling faintly of pipe tobacco and expensive scotch. The grandfather clock in the corner ticked heavily, marking the midnight hour as Clara sat across from him at his oversized desk. Arthur slid a thick manila folder across the polished wood, his silver hair catching the amber glow of the banker’s lamp. Inside were wire transfer receipts totaling millions of dollars, funneled from the firm’s accounts into offshore holdings controlled exclusively by Julian and a shadowy corporate entity registered under the name Bennett Holdings. "He’s been embezzling from the partnership for three years," Arthur explained quietly, resting his weathered hands on the desk. "I suspected irregularities, but I never imagined he was using the funds to build this elaborate double life—and to pay off officials to alter vital records." Clara scanned the documents, her fingers tracing the fraudulent signatures. The puzzle was finally snapping into place. Julian’s sudden rise in social circles, his acquisition of the modern mansion, and his callous disregard for her were all financed by corporate theft and calculated deceit. "If we go to the police with just these, his legal team will tie us up in injunctions for months," Clara noted, her analytical mind cutting through the emotional debris. "We need the physical archives from his private wall safe at the house. The original hard drives, the real passports." Arthur nodded slowly, leaning back into his leather chair. "Which means you’ll have to go back there. Not as a trespasser, but with leverage." He reached into his drawer and pulled out a small, heavy brass key. "This opens the side service entrance. The security detail changes shift at two in the morning. You’ll have a twenty-minute window." Clara took the key, feeling its cold metal bite into her palm. The danger was palpable; if Julian caught her on the property, he wouldn't hesitate to invoke his forged legal narrative, and local authorities, already greased by his substantial donations, might side with him. Yet, the thought of her daughters sleeping under the same roof as Victoria and a desperate, cornered man fueled her resolve. She slipped the key into her pocket, standing up with a quiet determination that caused Arthur to look at her with newfound respect. "Be careful, Clara," the older man cautioned softly. "Julian is no longer the man we thought we knew. Ambition has eaten away whatever conscience he once possessed." Clara offered a faint, humorless smile. "Ambition built a house of cards, Arthur. It’s time to let the wind in."
