Chapter 7

The highway stretched out before them like a ribbon of dark asphalt under a starless sky. Marcus gripped the steering wheel of the battered SUV, navigating the winding mountain roads with practiced ease while the rain battered the windshield. In the passenger seat, Emma sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket over her royal blue dress, her eyes fixed on the illuminated screen of the recovered laptop. The data Perel Daley had sent was extensive—bank transfers, encrypted communications, and scanned copies of the forged legal documents bearing Julian's hidden digital signature. "We're forty miles outside of Lake Placid," Marcus announced, breaking the heavy silence that had filled the cabin for the past hour. "Your father’s safehouse is an old hunting lodge near the timberline. It has no cell service, which is why they haven't been able to trace his exact coordinates until recently." Emma nodded slowly, her fingers dancing across the keyboard as she decrypted the final audio file from her father’s personal archive. The progress bar crawled forward at an agonizingly slow pace. "Marcus, how did Julian and Clara find out about the cabin?" she asked, her voice tight with concern. "Someone on the board must have leaked the location after Perel’s firm pinged the offshore account." Marcus glanced sideways at her, his jaw tightening. "It wasn't just someone on the board, Emma. It was someone close to you—someone who had access to your private schedule." Emma’s mind raced through the list of her associates, landing with a sickening thud on a name she had trusted implicitly. "Clara’s assistant, Sarah. She volunteered to organize my travel arrangements last week." Marcus nodded grimly. "Exactly. They've been tracking your movements from the very beginning, hoping you'd lead them straight to your father so they could eliminate the final obstacle to their corporate merger." Emma felt a cold shiver run down her spine, eclipsing the chill of the mountain air. They weren't just playing a corporate game; they were fighting a war for survival. She looked out the window as the dense pine forests of the Adirondacks loomed like shadowy monoliths in the darkness. Every mile brought them closer to the truth, but it also brought their pursuers closer to the kill. She closed the laptop and took a steadying breath, resolving that whatever awaited them at the end of this dark road, she would not run anymore.
