Chapter 3

The city streets outside the luxury boutique gleamed under a steady drizzle, casting long, distorted reflections of neon signs across the wet asphalt. Emma walked briskly, her heels clicking a sharp rhythm against the pavement as she tried to regulate her breathing. The adrenaline coursing through her veins kept the cold at bay, but her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. Her father alive? For three years, she had lived with the crushing grief of his supposed suicide, a tragedy orchestrated by the very board members Julian now controlled. She pulled her smartphone from her clutch, ignoring a flurry of frantic text messages from Julian and an unknown number that could only be Perel Daley. The incoming call from Perel earlier had interrupted their little ambush in the store, serving as the digital tripwire that froze Julian's illicit transfer. She ducked into the quiet alcove of a historic bank building to escape the wind and dialed Perel’s number directly. The line rang twice before a deep, calm voice answered. "Emma. I was wondering when you'd call," Perel said, the sound of keyboard clicking humming softly in the background. "Is it true?" Emma asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Is my father really alive?" There was a brief, heavy pause on the other end of the line, filled only with the static of a secure connection. "Yes, Emma. He is alive, but he's in grave danger," Perel replied carefully. "The people who drove him into hiding three years ago—the same syndicate Julian and Clara have been quietly partnering with—just located his signal in upstate New York. He reached out to my firm because he knows the signature Julian used to steal your shares was forged using an old protocol only your family holds." Emma closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the cool stone pillar of the bank. The pieces of the puzzle were finally clicking into place, forming a picture of betrayal far more vast and sinister than she had ever imagined. Julian hadn't just wanted her money; he had wanted to permanently erase the last legal heirs to the family estate. "Send me the coordinates," Emma instructed, her tone hardening into absolute resolve. "I'm going to him." Perel hesitated, warning her of the risks, but the stubborn determination in Emma's voice made further argument futile. "Be careful, Emma," Perel cautioned before hanging up. "You’re being watched." Just as the call disconnected, the beam of a pair of headlights swept across the wet alleyway, illuminating a black sedan idling suspiciously at the corner. Emma's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly stepped deeper into the shadows, realizing that her flight from the jewelry store was only the beginning of a much deadlier game.
