Chapter 10

The tension in the rustic lodge was thick enough to cut with a knife. The two tactical operatives fanned out, flanking Julian as they closed the distance toward Arthur and Emma. Arthur tightened his grip on the iron poker, planting his feet firmly despite his age and lingering injuries. Emma stepped out from behind her father, her eyes locked onto Julian with a cold, unyielding fury that momentarily checked his advance. "You really think you've won, don't you, Julian?" Emma asked, her voice carrying a calm, chilling authority that echoed through the room. Julian sneered, slowing his pace as he reached into his jacket to pull out a small digital tablet displaying the frozen transfer screen. "Look at the numbers, Emma. The override code is processing right now. Your father’s estate is mine, your shares are mine, and this little cabin is just a footnote in a corporate acquisition." Just as Julian finished his sentence, a low, rhythmic beep echoed from the tablet in his hand. The screen flashed from green to a stark, blinding red, accompanied by a formal system warning: CRITICAL ERROR: FEDERAL ASSET FREEZE INITIATED. ALL ACCOUNTS LOCKED PENDING CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. Julian’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of sheer horror as he tapped frantically at the screen. "No... no, that's impossible!" he shouted, his voice cracking with panic. "The firewall was impenetrable!" From the shadows of the back hallway, Marcus stepped into the room, holding a satellite uplink device connected to a portable tactical radio. "It was impenetrable, Julian, until Perel Daley uploaded the master cryptographic key that Emma gave me in the park," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes fixed on the stunned operatives. At that exact moment, the wail of approaching sirens began to echo through the mountain valley, growing louder and closer with every passing second as state police vehicles navigated the winding access road. The two tactical operatives exchanged uneasy glances, immediately dropping their aggressive posture and taking a step back toward the open door. They weren't paid to go to federal prison for corporate embezzlement. Julian turned on them in a blind fury, grabbing one of the operatives by the collar. "Stop them! Arrest them!" he screamed like a madman. The operative shoved Julian away with a disgusted heave, heading straight out the door into the rain.
