Chapter 5

Back at his downtown penthouse, Julian paced the length of the minimalist living room like a caged animal. The panoramic windows offered a sweeping, rain-streaked view of the glittering city skyline, but he saw none of it. His mind was consumed by the catastrophic failure of the financial transfer and the terrifying realization that Emma was slipping entirely out of his control. Clara sat on the white leather sofa, nursing a glass of scotch with a hand that shook slightly despite her best efforts to remain composed. "Track her phone, Julian," Clara snapped, her voice cutting through the silence of the room. "If she connects that flash drive to an external network, our entire corporate structure will collapse before the morning bell." Julian stopped pacing and glared at her, his anger finally spilling over. "Do you think I haven't tried? She’s using an encrypted proxy routed through Perel Daley’s firm. Our firewall can't penetrate it without raising federal flags." He walked over to the mahogany desk where his laptop displayed a complex web of corporate holdings, all tied to the stolen shares currently locked in dispute. The forged signature on the estate documents—the very cornerstone of their hostile takeover—was flagged by the banking authority as anomalous. If Emma presented the original physical document with her father's true seal, every single asset they had acquired would be seized, and they would face immediate criminal prosecution for fraud and conspiracy. "We need that physical flash drive," Julian muttered, staring at his reflection in the dark glass of the window. "And we need to find her father before she does." Clara stood up, her green dress rustling as she walked over to join him, her expression hardening into calculated ruthlessness. "Then we use the leverage we still have," she said quietly. "Emma’s cousin, Toby. He still works in the lower-tier accounts department. He doesn't know the whole story, but he’s desperate for promotion." Julian turned slowly, a grim, calculating light returning to his eyes. "Call him," Julian instructed. "Tell him we’re prepared to hand over the regional directorship, but only if he delivers Emma’s personal laptop to this office within the hour." Clara smiled thinly, reaching for her phone. They were playing a dangerous, high-stakes game of chess, and they were willing to sacrifice anyone on the board to protect their ill-gotten empire. Little did they know, Emma was already three moves ahead, utilizing Marcus’s insider knowledge to dismantle their corporate fortress from the inside out.
