Chapter 8: The Escape Hatch

The heavy diesel engine of the delivery truck idled outside the sorting facility with a deep, rhythmic thrum. Inside the damp, echoing room, Chloe pushed the baby bassinet through the final exit door just as the overhead fluorescent lights flickered on, illuminating rows of stacked laundry carts and industrial folding tables.

Clara slipped past Miller while the guard was still processing the sound of the departing truck, slamming the heavy fire door behind her and throwing the deadbolt from the outside. The metal mechanism locked into place with a definitive thud, trapping the guard temporarily on the lower level.

"Clara!" Chloe cried out, holding the baby securely in one arm as she opened the side passenger door of a faded blue pickup truck. A rugged-looking man with graying hair leaned across the bench seat, pushing open the heavy metal door from the inside.

"Get in, quick!" Clara's brother, Thomas, shouted over the roar of the engine. "Security is already circling the front courtyard. If we don't clear the gate in two minutes, local police will have the road blockaded."

Clara hoisted the bassinet into the truck bed while Chloe scrambled into the passenger cab, settling the infant carefully onto her lap. Clara climbed into the truck bed beside the bassinet, pulling a heavy canvas tarp over the metal frame to conceal it from view.

"Drive, Thomas!" Clara yelled, pounding twice on the cab roof.

The truck lurched forward, its rear tires spinning briefly on the wet pavement before catching traction. It surged down the alleyway just as two security cruisers rounded the corner of the administrative wing, their emergency flashers painting the brick walls in strobing flashes of red and blue.

Through the rear window of the cab, Chloe watched the hospital recede into the rainy night. Her hands trembled as she stroked the baby's tiny cheek. The infant remained remarkably calm, sleeping peacefully despite the chaos surrounding its birth.

"We made it out," Chloe whispered to Thomas, who kept his eyes fixed on the winding road ahead.

"We made it out of the building," Thomas replied grimly, shifting gears as the truck climbed the ramp toward the interstate. "But Evelyn Sterling controls the county sheriff, the local judges, and half the state legislature. Getting out of the hospital was the easy part. Keeping this child safe is where the real war begins."
