Chapter 4: A Fractured Alliance

Back in the archive room, Evelyn Sterling inspected the abandoned metal shelving with clinical detachment. A single stray baby blanket lay discarded on a wooden stool, still warm to the touch. She picked it up between two fingers, her expression unreadable.

"They went through the service hatch," Evelyn stated flatly, turning to face two private security guards standing rigidly near the doorway. "Find them. But I want the child unharmed. The optics of a struggle in the basement would be catastrophic for the foundation's public relations."

Julian stood near the threshold, staring down at the empty bassinet's imprint in the dust. A heavy sense of nausea churned in his stomach. He remembered his father's final days, the whispered confessions about a second family kept hidden behind charitable trusts and falsified adoption records. This baby wasn't just an inconvenience; it was the rightful heir to the entire Sterling estate.

"Mother, stop this," Julian said, his voice stronger than before. "Let them go. If we take this child, we become monsters."

Evelyn turned slowly, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. She walked up to her son, stopping just inches away, and lowered her voice to a harsh whisper. "Monsters? We are survivors, Julian. Your grandfather built this fortune on hard choices, and I preserved it against the tides of time. You think charity keeps the lights on? You think philanthropy feeds the board members? Power does. And power requires absolute control."

"At the cost of an innocent life?" Julian challenged, meeting her gaze for the first time in his adult life.

"At any cost," Evelyn replied coldly. She gestured to the guards. "Secure the perimeter exits. Nobody leaves the hospital grounds with a child."

As the guards rushed out into the corridor, Julian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his personal smartphone. His fingers hovered over the screen. He knew Clara's cell number by heart from the initial board meetings. He had minutes to decide whether to aid the escape or help his mother seal the vault.
