Chapter 5: The Digital Trail

The screen of Julian's phone glowed softly in the dim light of the archive room. His thumb tapped out a rapid message to Clara Vance: North exit is blocked. Security heading to the loading dock. Use the laundry chute service tunnel instead. He hit send before he could talk himself out of it, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.

Evelyn was standing by the desk, reviewing the remaining paperwork in the metal filing cabinet. She did not notice her son's betrayal, her mind entirely focused on the legal ramifications of the missing infant.

"Julian, bring the ledger," Evelyn instructed without looking up. "The original birth certificates from 1994 must be recovered. If those documents surface during the state audit, our tax-exempt status evaporates overnight."

"I'll check the secondary files in the administrative office," Julian replied, keeping his voice steady with a supreme effort of will. He turned and walked out of the archive room, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Meanwhile, deep in the sub-basement labyrinth, Clara's phone vibrated against her hip. She pulled it out, her eyes scanning the digital message in the dim amber glow of the exit corridor. She stopped the bassinet immediately.

"What is it?" Chloe asked, breathing heavily as she clutched the heavy ledger binder. "Did they find us?"

"No," Clara murmured, showing the screen to the younger nurse. "Julian sent this. He told us to avoid the loading dock and use the laundry chute service tunnel instead."

Chloe stared at the screen in disbelief. "Can we trust him? He's a Sterling."

"We don't have many alternatives," Clara reasoned, her gaze shifting back toward the intersection ahead. "If security is swarming the loading dock, walking right into their trap is suicide. The laundry chute connects directly to the sorting facility off Elm Street. There's an unmarked delivery van parked there every Tuesday morning."

They changed direction, pivoting down a narrower, brick-lined corridor that descended even deeper into the hospital's mechanical bowels. The air here was thick with the scent of industrial detergent and hot steam. Towering canvas bins on heavy iron wheels lined the walls, filled with soiled linens from the surgical wards above.
