Chapter 2: Shadows Across the Glass

Through the reinforced wired glass of the archive door, Evelyn Sterling cut an imposing silhouette. Her dark blue suit was impeccably tailored, every button fastened with military precision, and her short blonde hair framed a face hardened by decades of calculated social dominance. Beside her, Julian shifted his weight from foot to foot, his brown jacket zipped halfway up against the chill of the hospital's subterranean air conditioning.

Evelyn tapped a manicured fingernail against the glass. The sound was sharp, rhythmic, and demanding. She did not raise her voice; she did not need to. Her presence alone commanded compliance from everyone in the facility.

"Open this door immediately," Evelyn commanded through the wire-reinforced barrier. Her tone was eerily calm, carrying the terrifying weight of absolute certainty. "You are harboring stolen hospital property, Nurse Vance. This foolishness ends right now."

Julian leaned closer to his mother, his voice dropping to an urgent murmur. "Mother, please lower your voice. There are patients sleeping down the hall. We can handle this through legal channels without making a spectacle that draws the press."

Evelyn turned her sharp gaze onto her son, her eyes narrowing with disappointment. "Legal channels take months, Julian. The board votes on the restructuring endowment tomorrow morning. If this infant is registered under the true family lineage, our entire settlement collapses. Do you want your father's life work dismantled by a paperwork error?"

"It’s not an error," Julian muttered, looking down at his polished leather shoes. "The birth mother signed the relinquishment under duress. We both know it."

"She signed it," Evelyn corrected coldly, "because it was the only logical choice for her station in life. Now, step aside and let security deal with the lock."

Inside the room, Clara and Chloe exchanged a grim glance. The lock on the heavy door began to rattle as a maintenance key was inserted from the outside. The deadbolt slid back with a sickening metallic clunk.

"Help me lift the bassinet," Clara whispered urgently, her hands already gripping the tubular steel frame. "We are heading for the rear service hatch. Do not look back, Chloe. Whatever you hear, keep moving."

Chloe nodded, wiping her damp cheek with the back of her sleeve. They hoisted the lightweight medical cart just as the heavy door swung wide open, revealing the cold, unforgiving glare of the corridor beyond.
