Chapter 13: The Collapse of an Empire

"You're too late, Evelyn," Judge Harrison said, stepping into the circle of light cast by the SUV headlights. "The federal prosecutor's office has already filed an emergency injunction freezing all Sterling foundation assets pending a full criminal audit of Saint Jude Hospital."
Evelyn turned sharply to her security detail, but the guards were already lowering their hands, recognizing the state police insignia on the arriving cruisers. She turned back to Harrison, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "This is a malicious fabrication. You have no legal standing."
"I have sworn depositions from three former hospital administrators, financial wire records dating back twenty years, and the original birth ledger currently sitting in the hands of the state attorney general," Harrison replied steadily. He turned his gaze to Julian. "And I have a primary witness who is willing to testify to the systematic cover-up."
Julian took a deep, shuddering breath. He looked at his mother—the woman who had raised him without warmth, who had taught him that human lives were merely counters in a game of power. Then he looked at Clara, and beyond her, toward the cabin where a safe, innocent life was just beginning.
"It's over, Mother," Julian said, his voice ringing clear and strong through the mountain wind. "We are done hiding the truth."

Evelyn stared at her son, her lips parting slightly as she realized the full magnitude of her defeat. The ironclad dynasty she had spent her entire life building, protecting, and ruthlessly maintaining was crumbling into dust before her eyes. She did not scream or cry; she simply straightened the lapels of her blue suit with stiff, mechanical precision, retreating into the cold, impenetrable shell of her own pride.
The state police officers stepped forward, gently placing handcuffs around Evelyn's wrists before escorting her toward the rear of a patrol cruiser. She didn't look back once.
