Chapter 7 - The Frozen Account

The screen went black, reflecting Ethan's own horrified expression back at him like a dark mirror. With trembling fingers, he tapped the icon for his corporate banking app, waiting impatiently as the security circle spun endlessly against the white background.
"What did he do?" Clara asked, her voice trembling as she clutched the edge of the nearest chair. "Ethan, talk to me. What did Marcus mean?"
The app finally loaded. A harsh red banner flashed across the top of the screen: ACCOUNT FROZEN. PENDING FEDERAL COMPLIANCE INVESTIGATION. Below it, a line-item transfer showed five million dollars deposited from an unregistered Cayman Islands shell corporation, immediately flagged by automated anti-money laundering protocols.
"He framed me," Ethan whispered, the words barely audible over the faint jazz music playing in the restaurant background. "He just planted five million dollars of illegal capital directly into my primary operating account."
Arthur stepped closer, looking at the glowing phone screen with grim satisfaction. "Just as he did to me thirty years ago. The leopard doesn't change its spots, Ethan. Marcus operates with absolute impunity because he believes no one has the courage to tear down the empire to get to him."
"We can fight this," Clara said, though her voice lacked conviction. She looked around the high-end dining room, suddenly realizing how vulnerable they were standing out in the open. "We can call our corporate legal team right now. We have retained counsel for—"
"Retained counsel that Marcus has been paying off since before you graduated law school, Clara," Sarah interrupted quietly. She adjusted the boy in her arms; the child stirred, murmuring softly in his sleep against her light blue dress. "Marcus owns the board, the legal advisors, and half the compliance officers in the district. A traditional legal defense is a suicide mission."
Ethan clenched his jaw so hard his teeth ached. He looked from Sarah to Arthur, feeling like a pawn in a chess match being played by masters who had been sacrificing pieces for decades.
"Then what do we do?" Ethan demanded, his voice rising, drawing a sharp, disapproving glance from a nearby maitre d'. Ethan lowered his voice, stepping into Arthur's personal space. "You brought the ghosts back, old man. You brought the fire. Now tell me how we survive it."
Arthur reached into the breast pocket of his blue suit and pulled out an old, worn brass key. He pressed it firmly into Ethan's palm, curling Ethan's fingers around the cold metal.
"There is a safety deposit box at the Federal Trust downtown," Arthur said quietly. "Registered under a name Marcus thinks was erased forever. Inside is the original ledger, signed by every board member who participated in the coup."
Ethan stared at the key in his hand. "And if we go downtown tonight?"

Before Arthur could answer, the restaurant's main security doors swung open with a heavy thud, and two men in dark federal suits stepped into the lobby.
