Chapter 11 - The Escape to Downtown

The cool night air hit Ethan's face like a splash of ice water as he stumbled out of the cellar doorway into the narrow, shadowed alley. Clara was already waiting by a sleek black sedan idling near the dumpster, the engine humming quietly. Sarah sat in the back seat, cradling the sleeping boy who hadn't stirred through the entire ordeal.
"Get in, right now!" Clara urged from the driver's seat, her knuckles white on the steering wheel as she watched the end of the alley for movement.
Ethan climbed into the passenger seat, wincing slightly as his bruised shoulder pressed against the leather headrest. Arthur slipped into the back beside Sarah, pulling the heavy metal door shut with a muffled thud.
"Drive, Clara. Federal Trust Building, downtown," Arthur instructed calmly, as if they were simply heading home from a routine board meeting instead of fleeing a federal trap.
Clara slammed her foot down on the accelerator, and the sedan surged forward, tires screeching slightly against the wet asphalt as they rocketed out of the alleyway and into the neon-lit grid of the city.
Ethan leaned his head back against the seat, rubbing his temples where a splitting headache had begun to form. He looked in the rearview mirror at Sarah, who was gently stroking the curly brown hair of the sleeping child.
"Why did you bring him into this, Sarah?" Ethan asked quietly, his voice laced with exhaustion rather than anger. "A six-year-old boy has no business running through restaurant doors into a war zone."
Sarah looked up, her dark eyes meeting his in the dim light of the dashboard. "Because his father died three years ago thinking he was a nobody, Ethan. And my father—your uncle Marcus—spent the last three years threatening to take him away from me unless I signed over my research shares."
Ethan blinked, the pieces slowly falling into place. "Marcus killed your husband too?"
"He engineered a 'tragic accident' on a private yacht," Sarah said, her voice eerily steady. "Just like he engineered the bankruptcy that drove Arthur into hiding. Marcus doesn't just want money, Ethan. He wants absolute control of the entire Vance dynasty. And the only thing standing in his way is the original trust deed hidden in that safety deposit box."
Arthur leaned forward, placing a warm, heavy hand on the back of Ethan's seat. "Your uncle is a vulture, son. But tonight, we clip his wings."
The car wove aggressively through the midnight traffic, passing towering skyscrapers of glass and steel that pierced the overcast sky. Ahead of them, glowing in cold limestone and neo-classical columns, the Federal Trust Building loomed like a monolithic fortress.

As Clara pulled the car to a halt near the grand marble entrance, Ethan noticed something that made his blood run cold: three black SUVs with tinted windows were parked directly in front of the main doors, their hazard lights flashing in unison.
