Chapter 1 - The Stranger at the Table

The amber glow of the crystal chandeliers caught the condensation on the rim of Ethan's water glass, casting fractured light across the pristine white tablecloth. He stood rigidly, his knuckles white where they gripped the polished mahogany edge of the table. His dark wavy hair caught the warm restaurant light, contrasting sharply with the stiff collar of his white dress shirt and his tailored brown vest. Beside him, Clara stood draped in her emerald green off-the-shoulder evening dress, her posture tense as she watched the unexpected chaos unfold before them.
At the center table sat Sarah, her long dark wavy hair framing a face pale with sudden shock. She wore a light blue off-the-shoulder evening dress, her fingers trembling as she clutched a cloth napkin.
"Get away from my family's table," Ethan demanded, his voice cutting through the soft murmur of the high-end dining room with icy precision.
Sarah looked up, her eyes swimming with unshed tears. "Ethan, please. Just listen to me for one second."
"Listen to what?" Ethan snapped, his chest rising and falling beneath his vest in sharp, measured breaths. "That you invited a complete stranger into our private dinner? Who gave you the right to seat an old man and a random child here?"
"He's not a stranger," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking.
Across the room, the double mahogany doors swung wide open. A six-year-old boy with a halo of curly light brown hair sprinted across the polished floorboards, his tiny beige suit and silk bowtie bouncing with every energetic stride.
"Grandpa!" the boy yelled, his voice echoing against the vaulted ceiling.
He threw his small arms around an older man in a sharp blue suit with distinguished grey hair, burying his face into the man's coat. The older man knelt, wrapping his arms tightly around the child with a deeply familiar tenderness that sent a cold shudder down Ethan’s spine.
Ethan stared in absolute disbelief, his jaw dropping slack, his mind refusing to process the scene.
Sarah looked directly into Ethan's paralyzed eyes, a tear finally spilling over her lashes. "He has your eyes, Ethan."
Ethan stumbled backward, clutching his aching left arm where a sudden phantom pain flared. Clara grabbed his forearm, her expression a mask of panic as she pointed toward the reunion.

Ethan watched in frozen horror as the older man looked up, locking eyes with him and revealing a silver family signet ring identical to the one resting heavily on Ethan's own finger.
