Chapter 6 - The Digital Trap

The screen on Ethan's phone illuminated the pale planes of his face, casting harsh shadows across his beard and dark wavy hair. The familiar, smooth voice of Marcus Vance echoed off the elegant restaurant walls, shattering the delicate illusion of privacy they had managed to maintain.

"Marcus," Ethan growled into the phone, stepping away from the table as his chest heaved with suppressed rage. "You son of a bitch. You knew all along."

On the small screen, Marcus took a slow, deliberate sip of his scotch, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression entirely unbothered by the accusation. "Knowing is a professional courtesy in our tax bracket, Ethan. But bringing a convicted ghost and an unauthorized child to a public dining establishment? Very sloppy work for a CEO."

Clara hurried to Ethan's side, peering anxiously at the screen. "Ethan, hang up. He's recording this. He's setting you up for a corporate breach."

"Let him record," Arthur said, stepping up directly behind Ethan. He leaned into the frame of the front-facing camera so that his weathered face was clearly visible on Marcus's end of the line.

The screen froze for a fraction of a second. Marcus's hand paused halfway to his mouth, the scotch sloshing dangerously over the rim of the crystal glass. The absolute color drained from Marcus's cheeks, replacing his smug confidence with a look of pure, unadulterated terror.

"Arthur?" Marcus whispered, the word catching in his throat. "That's... that's impossible. You're dead."

"Not quite, brother," Arthur said, his voice steady, cold, and dripping with thirty years of righteous fury. "And the audit you buried in 1998? I brought copies. All of them."

Marcus slammed the glass down onto the mahogany desk, liquid splashing across the polished wood. "You're bluffing! If you try to release those files, the SEC will freeze every asset the family owns, including Ethan's controlling shares!"

Ethan turned his head, staring at Arthur in utter disbelief. "Wait. If those files are released, my company goes down too?"

Arthur didn't blink. "It was built on stolen foundations, Ethan. The only way to clean the slate is to burn the house down and build it right."

Sarah shifted the sleeping boy in her arms, her face grim. "He's right, Ethan. Marcus transferred the final tranche of offshore capital into your personal operating account just twenty minutes ago. You've been framed for embezzlement."

Ethan looked down at his phone screen, where Marcus was already smiling again, a cold, predatory grin spreading across his face.

"Check your banking app, nephew," Marcus purred softly before abruptly ending the call.
