Chapter 7 - Sins of the Father

Clara stared at the man she had shared a bed with for six years. The gentle, quiet architect who kissed Lily’s forehead before school and cooked pancakes on Sunday mornings looked entirely like a ghost from a war zone.

"Mark..." Clara's voice broke. "Give me the antidote. Look at her! Look at your daughter!"

Mark raised his head. For the first time that night, Clara saw genuine, agonizing pain behind his steel facade. He stood up, his hands shaking slightly as he opened the silver lockbox with a three-digit code. Inside sat a single ampoule containing a clear, viscous liquid and a sterile syringe.

"I didn't poison her, Clara," Mark said softly, his voice cracking. "I swear on my soul, I didn't do it."

"Then who did?!" Clara screamed, stepping forward as Lily let out another agonizing moan.

"I did," a quiet, chilling voice whispered from the dark hallway behind the dining table.

An elderly man stepped into the light, leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. His face was weathered like cracked leather, his eyes milky white with advanced cataracts, but his stance was undeniably dominant. He wore a crisp, tailored suit completely out of place in the damp mountain cabin.

Claire raised her shotgun instantly, aiming directly at the old man's chest. "Dad?"

Clara froze. "I thought you said your father was dead."

"He was supposed to be," Mark said, his jaw tightening as he drew the liquid into the syringe. "Arthur Vance faked his death six years ago to escape a federal indictment for illegal weapons trafficking and neurotoxin smuggling. He left Claire and me to take the fall. When I refused to let him use my design firms to launder the offshore payments, he threatened to wipe my entire family out."

"You were always so sentimental, Alan," the old man, Arthur, murmured with a ghastly smile. "A man with a family is a man with a leash. I slipped the compound into your household water filtration system three days ago. A micro-dose. Enough to make the child fall deathly ill the moment her mother stepped through the door."

"You poisoned a baby?!" Clara cried, absolute revulsion making her nauseous.

"She is leverage," Arthur said coldly. "And right now, Alan, my son Trent is outside with twelve armed marshals who believe this cabin holds a rogue kidnapper. You sign the offshore transfer deeds, or the final dose never enters that girl’s veins."

Mark looked at Clara, then down at the syringe in his hand. Outside, red lasers suddenly danced across the cedar walls of the cabin through the cracked windows.
