Chapter 14 - The Devil's Inheritance

Arthur Vance stepped closer, the crunch of his boots deliberate and slow. He ignored his dying son bleeding out in the mud and paused ten feet from where Clara stood with her revolver aimed at his heart.

"You shot your own son," Clara whispered, her hands shaking violently.

"He became a liability five years ago," Arthur replied smoothly, his tone as casual as an afternoon business meeting. "Trent lacked discipline. He allowed vengeance to cloud profit. A man who lets hatred govern his ledger is already dead."

"And you?" Claire spat, coughing as she pulled herself up against the truck's crushed wheel well. "What does that make you, Dad?"

"A pragmatist," Arthur said, slowly lowering the rifle until the barrel pointed at the earth. "Alan Cross was the finest operative I ever recruited. He had brilliance, precision, and an architect's mind for building impenetrable structures. I never wanted him dead. I only wanted him obedient."

"He chose his daughter over your empire," Clara said coldly, her finger tightening on the revolver's trigger. "He died in that bunker to wipe you out."

Arthur let out a soft, mocking chuckle that sent chills down Clara’s spine. "Do you truly believe Alan Cross died in that cellar, Mrs. Robinson?"

Clara froze. Her breath caught in her throat. "What?"

"Alan designed that bunker four years ago," Arthur said, stepping slightly closer. "He designed three separate exit routes. The drainage tunnel was the obvious one—the decoy meant for Claire to lead you through. Do you really think an architect who spent a decade outsmarting international intelligence agencies would trap himself behind an iron door with a crude thermite fuse?"

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. The memory flashed before her eyes: Mark locking the door, the calm look in his eyes, the smooth depression of the switch.

"Where is he?" Clara demanded, raising the gun higher.

"He’s already five miles down the river on an electric skiff, headed toward the coast," Arthur said calmly. "He knew that if you were with him, you would be hunted forever. But if you believed he was dead, you would return to your normal life, raise his daughter in peace, and let the ghost of Alan Cross vanish into legend."

Arthur reached into his coat with his good hand and pulled out a small black leather notebook, tossing it into the mud at Clara's feet.

"Inside that book are the routing numbers to seventeen bearer accounts in Switzerland, registered in Lily’s legal name. Eighty million dollars. That was Alan’s price for walking away. He traded his presence in your life for your daughter’s absolute security."

Clara looked at the notebook in the mud, then at the burning ridge in the distance.

"Pick it up, Clara," Arthur whispered. "Take your child, take the fortune, and disappear. Or shoot me, and spend the rest of your days looking over your shoulder wondering which shadow belongs to your husband."
