Chapter 4 - The Severed Line

The narrow interior of the ambulance turned into a violent cage.
"Trent, what the hell are you doing?!" Sam screamed from the head of the stretcher, his hands still holding Lily's oxygen mask in place. "Why is there potassium in the pediatric line?!"
"Shut up, Sam!" Trent barked, his voice dropping into a menacing, authoritarian register that shattered his hero facade. From under his tactical jacket, he pulled not a radio, but a compact matte-black semi-automatic pistol.
Clara shielded Lily with her own body, pressing her back against the gurney, her teeth chattering with raw adrenaline. "You're sick... you lied about Mark! What did you do to my daughter?!"
"I didn't lie about anything," Trent said, keeping the barrel leveled steadily at Clara’s chest while bracing his legs against the sway of the speeding ambulance. "Alan Cross—or Mark, whatever he calls himself—stole everything from me. My father’s land, my family’s trust, and five years of my life. He thought he could hide in this quiet suburban paradise, playing happy father and husband while I hunted in the dark."
"And Lily?" Clara sobbed, clutching the unconscious girl's pale, limp hand. "She’s five years old! She has nothing to do with this!"
"She is his legacy," Trent spat, stepping forward. "He poisoned her tonight with organophosphate to force me out of the shadows. He knew I was monitoring this district's dispatch. He sacrificed his own kid just to draw me into the open so he could settle the score."
Suddenly, the ambulance swerved violently to the left. The screech of tires tore through the cabin as the driver slammed on the brakes. Trent lost his footing, his shoulder crashing hard against the steel cabinets on the wall.
Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy metal oxygen cylinder resting beside the gurney and swung it with both hands, striking Trent directly across the side of his knee.
A sickening crunch cracked over the siren. Trent roared in pain, tumbling to the floor of the rig, the gun skittering across the blood-spotted linoleum.
"Driver! Open the back doors!" Clara screamed, scooping Lily's limp body into her arms.
Sam reached down and kicked Trent’s gun into the corner out of reach, his face pale with horror. "Go, Clara! Run!"

The back doors burst open from the impact of the sudden stop. Clara leaped into the rainy darkness of a deserted highway overpass. Rain lashed her face as she sprinted toward the embankment. Behind her, a black SUV idling on the shoulder suddenly flashed its high beams, blinding her completely.
The passenger door swung open, and an arm reached out from the darkness, pulling her inside.
