Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Architect

The iron poker struck Arthur's wrist with a sickening snap. The revolver clattered harmlessly against the stone hearth. Arthur let out a sharp hiss of agony, stumbling backward, but before he could recover, Claire lunged forward, sweeping his legs out from under him. The old patriarch crashed hard onto the floorboards, his head striking the edge of the stone fireplace, knocking him instantly unconscious.

"Grab Lily!" Claire shouted, panting as she kicked the revolver toward Clara. "We need to get to the cellar! Now!"

Outside, the storm roared with apocalyptic fury, punctuated by the violent, echoing blasts of automatic gunfire and hand-to-hand struggle. Clara snatched the revolver, gathered Lily’s limp body into her arms, and followed Claire down a narrow trapdoor hidden beneath the dining room rug.

The cellar smelled of damp earth and old concrete. A single dim bulb flickered overhead, revealing rows of industrial servers, battery backups, and several medical crates.

"Is this where you've been living?" Clara breathed, laying Lily down on a cot lined with clean wool blankets.

"It was Alan's fallback bunker," Claire answered, securing the heavy iron drop-bar across the trapdoor. "He built it when he realized my father was hunting him. He never wanted to pull you into this, Clara. He stayed with you because you were the only real, clean thing in his entire corrupted life."

"He lied to me for six years!" Clara whispered furiously, checking Lily’s pulse. The child's heartbeat was strong now, eighty beats per minute, her fever steadily breaking. "He brought assassins to our doorstep! He endangered his own daughter!"

"He tried to walk away!" Claire snapped back. "You think you can just submit a resignation letter to a multi-million-dollar syndicate? The only way out was to destroy them from the inside. That’s what tonight was. A trap."

Suddenly, the heavy wooden trapdoor above them rattled violently.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

"Claire! Clara! Open the latch!" Mark’s voice echoed through the wood, strained and ragged.

Claire immediately threw the iron drop-bar back and shoved the trapdoor open. Mark collapsed down the wooden steps, tumbling onto the concrete floor. He was covered in mud and blood. His left arm hung completely useless, his shoulder shattered, and deep lacerations covered his face.

"Trent?" Claire asked, her shotgun raised toward the opening.

"Down," Mark gasped, coughing up dark blood. "Pushed him off the north cliff into the river gorge. But the marshals... they aren't real marshals. They’re private contractors hired by Arthur. They're surrounding the cabin with thermal scopes."

He looked up at Clara, his eyes filled with unbearable sorrow.

"Clara... take the emergency tunnel under the server racks. It leads to the abandoned drainage pipe half a mile south. Claire will drive you to the state line."

"What about you?" Clara asked, her heart tearing in two conflicting directions.

Mark reached into his pocket and pulled out a small electronic detonator with a glowing green LED. "I'm going to erase Blackwood Ridge from the map."
