Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Cabin

The interior of the SUV smelled of wet leather and ozone.

Clara slammed against the back leather seat, Lily held tightly against her chest. The car accelerated immediately, tires spinning against the wet asphalt before catching traction and hurling them forward into the storm.

"Keep her elevated," a gravelly, female voice commanded from the driver's seat.

Clara looked up through her wet hair, expecting Mark. Instead, behind the steering wheel sat a woman in her late thirties, her face scarred across the left cheekbone by a deep, jagged burn mark. Her hair was cropped short, her knuckles scarred and weathered. Her resemblance to Trent Vance was undeniable—the same sharp cheekbones, the same piercing steel-gray eyes.

"Claire?" Clara gasped, her voice trembling. "You're... you're alive?"

"Barely," Claire Vance said, checking the rearview mirror as the flashing lights of the ambulance faded behind them. "My brother has spent the last five years telling everyone Mark murdered me. It was the perfect cover for him to take over my father’s syndicate operations in the Northwest."

"Syndicate?" Clara felt her world crumbling into incomprehensible madness. "Mark is an architect! He designs commercial retail spaces!"

Claire let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Alan designs shell corporations and underground storage facilities, Clara. He was my father’s primary money-launderer. When my father died, Trent wanted the entire network. He tried to burn me alive inside the cabin on Blackwood Ridge to silence me. Alan pulled me out of the fire. He hid me, gave me a new identity, and then disappeared himself."

"If Mark is innocent, why is my daughter dying?!" Clara screamed, pressing her ear to Lily’s chest. The child's heart was fluttering erratically, like a trapped moth. "He left a note! He told Trent to go to Blackwood Ridge for the antidote!"

"Because Alan knew Trent would track your house down tonight," Claire said, turning the SUV onto a steep, unpaved logging road winding up into a densely forested mountain. "The note wasn't for Trent. It was for me. Alan knew I would intercept Trent's radio scanner."

Claire reached into the center console and tossed a small glass vial and a pre-loaded pediatric auto-injector into the backseat.

"Atropine and pralidoxime," Claire said urgently. "Inject it into the outer muscle of her right thigh. Right now, Clara, or her lungs will completely fill with fluid."

Clara stared at the syringe. Trusting a stranger meant risking her daughter’s life; doing nothing guaranteed her death. She pulled off Lily’s pajama bottom, positioned the needle, and slammed the injector down into the muscle.

Lily’s tiny body convulsed, gasped deeply for air, and then her eyes snapped wide open, completely vacant and unseeing.
