Chapter 8 - The Blueprint of Corruption

The interior of Dr. Holloway’s cottage smelled of old paper, peppermint tea, and burning cedar wood. Clara sat quietly in a frayed velvet armchair by the crackling fireplace, wrapped in a knitted wool blanket that the elderly woman had silently handed her.
Arthur stood by the heavy oak desk in the center of the study, watching as Dr. Holloway slotted the MicroSD card into an archaic desktop computer that lacked any internet connection.
"Completely isolated from the grid," Dr. Holloway muttered, typing a series of complex commands into the glowing amber terminal. "Vance thinks he deleted all my old administrator overrides, but he was always arrogant."
Rows of encrypted files began populating the CRT monitor screen, scrolling downward at a dizzying speed. Dr. Holloway clicked on a folder marked FINANCIAL LEDGERS & DONOR INFLUENCE.
"Look at this," Dr. Holloway said, pointing a bony finger at the screen. "St. Jude isn't just a private school. It's a behavioral compliance laboratory funded by corporate conglomerates looking to test psychological conditioning models on upper-middle-class teenagers."
Arthur leaned closer, his eyes scanning the names listed under corporate sponsors. Major pharmaceutical companies, private security contractors, and political action committees dominated the financial breakdown sheets.
"They break the students down using humiliation, isolation, and physical intimidation," Dr. Holloway continued, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "Then, once the children are compliant, they use their parents' corporate and political leverage to push policy changes through local government boards. Clara was targeted because you refused to sign the property development waiver for your downtown workshop last month."
Arthur felt the blood rush to his ears. "My workshop? That land has been in our family for three generations. They tried to buy it out, and when I said no..."
"They used the school to break your family from the inside out," Dr. Holloway finished grimly. "Mrs. Gable’s scissors weren't random discipline. It was a message to you, Arthur. Give up the land, or your daughter loses her identity piece by piece."
Clara dropped her teacup into its saucer with a sharp clatter, her eyes wide with terror as she looked up at her father. "Dad... is that why they did it? Because of our building?"

Before Arthur could answer, the single incandescent bulb hanging from the cottage ceiling flickered violently and died, plunging the room into pitch blackness.
