Chapter 4 - The Footsteps in the Dark

The beam of a high-powered flashlight sliced through the darkness, sweeping across the rows of filing cabinets just inches from where Arthur and Clara crouched behind a stack of empty wooden pallets.
"I know someone is down here," Principal Vance’s voice boomed, cold and authoritative, bouncing off the damp concrete walls. "The security sensor at the sub-level entrance was triggered."
Clara pressed her face tightly against Arthur’s shoulder, her breathing shallow and rapid. Arthur wrapped his arm firmly around her back, his other hand gripping the heavy strap of his backpack containing the stolen red journal. He strained his ears, calculating the distance between their hiding spot and the emergency exit stairwell at the far end of the archive room.
"Mr. Hayes," Vance called out again, his footsteps drawing closer, the sharp click-clack of his leather soles hitting the floor like a ticking clock. "You are trespassing on private institutional property. Hiding in the dark will not protect you from the legal consequences of breaking and entering."
Arthur remained completely still, his eyes adjusting to the faint sliver of amber light leaking from a high, grated street-level window. He spotted the heavy push-bar of the emergency door roughly thirty feet away. If they made a break for it now, the noise would give them away instantly. If they stayed, it was only a matter of seconds before Vance’s flashlight beam illuminated their faces.
"You think you can protect her by running away, Arthur?" Vance’s voice echoed, shifting closer to the left aisle. "St. Jude is backed by people whose names you can't even fathom. Whatever you found down here... it won't see the light of day."
Arthur slowly shifted his weight onto the balls of his feet. He looked down at Clara, giving her a reassuring nod in the dim amber glow. He counted silently in his head—three, two, one—and exploded out from behind the pallets, grabbing Clara’s hand and sprinting at full speed toward the exit door.
"Hey! Stop right there!" Vance roared, his footsteps turning into a heavy, charging sprint behind them.

Arthur slammed his shoulder against the push-bar of the emergency door. The rusty latch gave way with a deafening screech of metal, spilling bright afternoon sunlight into the gloomy basement as they tumbled out onto the gravel alleyway.
