Chapter 2 - The Hallway Confrontation

Arthur’s shadow stretched long and dark across the polished linoleum floor of Room 204. The entire classroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence, broken only by the low hum of the ceiling projector. Clara let out a choked gasp, dropping the clump of brown hair back onto her desk.
"What is the meaning of this?" Mrs. Gable demanded, stepping forward, her posture rigid. Her light pinkish-grey button-up shirt remained impeccably ironed, contrasting sharply with Arthur’s disheveled grey button-up and crooked tie.
"You touched my daughter," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying a razor-edge of controlled fury that made several students shrink back into their chairs. "You had no right to lay a hand on her, let alone mutilate her."
"At St. Jude Academy, we mold disciplined citizens, Mr. Hayes," Mrs. Gable replied, her tone dripping with institutional arrogance. "Your daughter failed to submit her literature portfolio for the third consecutive week. This is our corrective protocol."
"Your protocol is assault!" Arthur shouted, taking three heavy strides forward until he stood mere inches from the teacher. "You are running a prison, not a school! Give me her backpack. We are leaving right now."
"She leaves when the final bell rings," Mrs. Gable countered, her eyes narrowing as she refused to back down an inch. "And if you remove her now, it constitutes an unexcused withdrawal, resulting in immediate permanent expulsion without credit transfer."
Arthur stared at her, the gears turning in his head. He knew the St. Jude board was untouchable, heavily funded by wealthy alumni who turned a blind eye to disciplinary excess. But looking at Clara’s tear-stained face and jagged hair, he knew he couldn't just walk away.
"Keep your credits," Arthur snarled, reaching out and grabbing Clara’s arm gently, pulling her toward him. "We are done here. Permanently."
"Think very carefully about this, Mr. Hayes," Mrs. Gable warned softly, a dangerous, knowing smirk touching the corners of her lips. "You might pull her out of my classroom, but you cannot pull her out of the system. You have no idea what secrets are buried in these walls."

Arthur froze at the threshold, turning his head back slowly as Mrs. Gable whispered something chilling about the school's basement archives.
