Chapter 5 - The Power Cut

Total darkness enveloped the faculty lounge, save for the pale, ghostly glow of the computer monitor illuminating Arthur’s stunned face. The hum of the desktop tower sounded unnaturally loud in the sudden quiet. Outside the frosted window, the courtyard shadows lengthened as the autumn sun dipped below the roofline.
Arthur stood frozen, his eyes fixed on the glowing screen. The revelation that his own home—the modest house where Chloe had grown up—was somehow tied to a historical cover-up shattered his reality. Was that why Mrs. Gable had targeted his daughter so publicly? Was the hair-cutting incident not just a sadistic disciplinary act, but a warning shot fired across his family's bow?
A heavy thud echoed against the hallway wall outside the lounge, followed by the muffled sound of scraping furniture. Someone was dragging a heavy object down the corridor.
Arthur crept toward the door, pressing his ear against the cold wood.
"...needs to be out of the district by tonight," a muffled voice hissed—Principal Henderson, speaking in a harsh, urgent whisper.
"The father is secured in the lounge, but he saw the page twelve backup," a second voice replied. It was Mrs. Gable. Her tone lacked the cold detachment she had displayed in the classroom; now she sounded ragged, desperate, and fiercely protective of a secret buried long before either of them had arrived in Oakridge.
"It doesn't matter," Henderson answered back. "The girl already gave the physical documents to the county prosecutor's investigator during lunch. The snip was just a distraction to buy us twenty minutes to wipe the local server."
Arthur’s heart skipped a beat. Chloe hadn't just acted recklessly; she had orchestrated a brilliant, dangerous sting operation right under the noses of the town's most powerful figures, using her own vulnerability as bait to shield the real transfer of evidence. She had known the risks. She had known Mrs. Gable would retaliate.
He gripped the brass door handle again, fueled by a sudden, surging wave of paternal pride and panic. If Chloe had already delivered the files to the prosecutor, she was now the primary target of an administration with everything to lose.
The computer monitor suddenly flashed white, clearing all open files and replacing them with a single, pulsing emergency alert message.

And then, from somewhere deep in the basement beneath the school, a heavy metallic clang rang out like a gunshot, followed by the sound of running footsteps heading straight toward the administrative wing.
