Chapter 10 - The Alley Confrontation

The damp night air bit sharply into Arthur’s face as he stepped out onto the metal loading dock ramp, keeping Chloe securely behind his right shoulder. The amber glow from the diner windows painted long, distorted shadows across the asphalt where Principal Henderson stood waiting, his hands resting casually inside the pockets of his trench coat.
A few feet away, leaning against the side of the municipal SUV, Chief Miller crossed his arms, the heavy iron wrench still dangling from his grip.
"It didn't have to come to this, Arthur," Miller said, his voice carrying a heavy tone of genuine regret. "If you and your daughter had just stayed out of the administrative archives, none of this would have been necessary."
"You covered up a toxic spill that killed my wife!" Arthur shouted, his voice breaking with a fury that drowned out the distant hum of highway traffic. "You let people drink poison for twenty years just to keep property values high!"
"We saved thousands of jobs, Arthur," Henderson retorted, stepping closer with a cold, unyielding smile. "Communities don't survive on absolute moral purity; they survive on compromise. That mill was the backbone of this town's economy. The chemical leak was contained decades ago, but the panic would have destroyed generations."
"By sacrificing my wife? By letting children like Chloe get terrorized and humiliated when they get too close to the truth?" Arthur spat back, his hand tightening around the metal flash drive in his pocket.
Chloe stepped out from behind her father, her expression devoid of fear. She raised her smartphone, its screen glowing brightly in the dark alley.
"You're too late, Principal Henderson," Chloe said clearly, her voice cutting through the damp night air. "The moment we walked into the diner, an automated protocol uploaded every single file, medical record, and financial ledger to the state environmental protection database and three independent newsrooms statewide. The stream went live forty seconds ago."
Henderson’s calm facade instantly shattered. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he whipped his own phone out of his pocket, his thumb frantically swiping across the screen. The display flashed a red server-error notification across all administrative nodes.

Chief Miller dropped the iron wrench with a heavy clang against the asphalt, staring blankly at the ground as the distant sound of approaching police sirens began to wail faintly from the north highway.
