Chapter 1 - The First Snip

The classroom air smelled of damp wool, cheap lavender floor wax, and sheer terror. Chloe sat frozen at her battered wooden desk, her long brown hair gathered crudely into a thick, uneven clump. Above her stood Mrs. Gable, the veteran middle-school instructor whose immaculate blonde bun never seemed to catch a stray breeze. In Mrs. Gable’s right hand, a pair of heavy, stainless-steel office scissors flashed under the buzzing fluorescent lights, cold and unforgiving.

Chloe’s lower lip trembled violently. A single fat tear rolled down her pale cheek, catching the light before dropping onto her light blue school shirt, darkening the cotton fabric instantly. Around them, twenty-two other eighth-graders sat in absolute, horrified silence. No one dared to breathe. The evidence of Chloe’s academic failure—a missed history project—hung in the balance not of a red pen, but of absolute humiliation.

"Please, I'm sorry, I'll do my homework next time," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate vulnerability that echoed off the chalk-dusted walls.

Mrs. Gable did not flinch. Her grip on the scissors tightened until her knuckles turned white.

"Words are cheap, Chloe. Action is what builds character, and yours is currently threadbare," Mrs. Gable replied, her tone chillingly flat. With a swift, practiced motion, the blades closed. A sharp snip cut through the quiet room, severing a massive lock of brown hair. It fell heavily onto the linoleum floor like a dead animal.

Across the aisle, Leo raised his smartphone slightly, his camera lens capturing the entire gruesome spectacle. On the screen, an incoming video call notification flashed brightly, displaying a single word: "Dad."

In the driver’s seat of a idling sedan three blocks away, Arthur stared down at his dashboard screen in absolute shock. The video feed showed his sobbing daughter, half her hair hacked off, staring directly into the camera with broken eyes. Arthur’s chest tightened so hard he couldn't inhale. He dropped his phone into the passenger footwell, slammed his car into reverse, and tore out of the parking lot.

As Arthur sped toward the school, his phone buzzed relentlessly against the floor mat, playing a muffled, frantic ringtone that he couldn't reach.
