Chapter 13 - Dawn Over Oakridge

The first pale rays of autumn sunlight broke over the jagged rooftops of Oakridge, casting a cold, golden hue across the deserted school parking lot. The emergency police tape fluttered lazily in the morning breeze around the main entrance of Oakridge Middle School, where a small crowd of bewildered parents and reporters had already begun to gather, whispering anxiously among themselves.

Arthur’s sedan pulled slowly into an empty space near the curb. Inside the car, the silence was heavy, filled with the exhausted weight of a sleepless night spent answering questions at the state police barracks.

Chloe stared out the passenger window at the brick facade of the school. Half of her brown hair remained short and jagged, a stark badge of the ordeal she had survived. She hadn't tried to even it out with scissors; she wore it as an unpolished truth.

"Are you ready for this?" Arthur asked gently, resting his hand on her shoulder.

"More than ever," Chloe replied, opening the car door and stepping out onto the asphalt.

As they walked toward the front entrance, a murmur rippled through the gathered crowd of parents. Heads turned, whispers circulated, and accusing glares were traded back and forth like currency. Some parents looked away in shame, recognizing the names of the council members scrolling across the morning news broadcasts on their phones; others looked at Chloe with a mixture of resentment and newfound respect.

Principal Henderson’s office windows on the second floor were dark, the blinds drawn tight against the morning light.

State Investigator Hayes was waiting by the front security doors, holding a clipboard and a large cardboard box containing personal effects from the administrative offices. He nodded respectfully as Arthur and Chloe approached the steps.

"The school board has been formally dissolved by emergency decree," Hayes announced quietly, handing Arthur an official document envelope. "Classes are suspended for the rest of the week while the state environmental safety teams clear the building's water lines."

Chloe looked up at the heavy double doors where Henderson had blocked her father just twenty-four hours earlier.

"What happens to the kids who knew?" Chloe asked softly.

"They get a choice," Hayes replied, offering a faint, reassuring smile. "To stay in a town built on buried secrets, or to help us build a new one."
