Chapter 4 - Locked In the Lounge

The heavy click of the deadbolt echoing in the faculty lounge snapped Arthur out of his trance. He whirled around, lunging for the brass door handle and twisting it hard, but it refused to turn. He threw his weight against the heavy oak wood, shouting Henderson’s name, but his voice was swallowed by the thick walls of the administrative wing.
On the computer monitor, the security video looped back to the beginning, showing Chloe’s nimble fingers picking the lock over and over again in silent mockery.
Arthur’s mind raced, struggling to bridge the gap between the gentle, homework-struggling daughter he raised and the calculated thief on the screen. Why would Chloe risk everything to photograph a teacher's personal journal? What could possibly be written inside those leather-bound pages that warranted such desperate measures—and such a draconian, public punishment from Mrs. Gable?
He paced the cramped room, his shoes squeaking on the linoleum. The room had only one small, frosted window facing the inner courtyard, bolted shut from the outside with heavy security screws. He was trapped, effectively neutralized by the very administration that should have been protecting his child.
A soft chime from his discarded phone on the table cut through the silence. He lunged for it. The screen lit up with a text message from an unknown number.
She wasn't stealing for herself, Mr. Vance. Check the footer notes on page twelve of the journal backup.
Arthur’s fingers flew across the computer keyboard, minimizing the video player and opening the folder containing the high-resolution images Chloe had captured in the locker room. He clicked through the files rapidly: Page 9... Page 10... Page 11... Page 12.
His eyes scanned the jagged, hurried handwriting of Mrs. Gable’s journal. The entry detailed a financial transaction dated three years prior, listing the names of three school board members, a substantial cash payout, and a specific address on the outskirts of town—an abandoned textile mill where the town's historical records had mysteriously vanished following a suspicious fire.
At the bottom of the page, written in bold red ink, was a sentence that made Arthur’s blood run cold: The Vance property was the foundation of the cover-up.

Before he could process the implications, the faculty lounge lights flickered violently and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
