Chapter 9 - The Ghost from the Past

Elena walked barefoot along the deserted asphalt of the riverside service road, her clothes soaked in river mud and her designer blouse ruined beyond recognition. The morning sun was just beginning to peek over the jagged skyline of the financial district, casting long, skeletal shadows across the empty loading docks.

Her phone—which Marcus had miraculously managed to retrieve and hand to her before the final shootout—buzzed violently in her palm. It wasn't an encrypted alert this time. It was a standard cellular phone call from an unknown, restricted number.

She hesitated for three seconds before pressing the green accept button and holding the device to her ear.

"Elena," a smooth, cultured voice said on the other end of the line. It was a voice she recognized instantly, a voice she had listened to across mahogany conference tables for the last three years.

"Arthur?" Elena whispered, stopping dead in her tracks. "Where are you? Marcus said they caught you! He said you were tied to a chair in Queens!"

"Marcus is an operative, my dear," Arthur Pendelton replied calmly, the sound of classical music playing softly in the background of his call. "He works for a rival intelligence faction that wants control of the Vanguard shipping routes, not exposure of the operation."

Elena’s knees felt weak. She leaned against a rusted chain-link fence, staring out at the grey, sluggish water of the river. "What are you talking about? You gave me those shipping manifests. You set up the audit!"

"I protected our national interests," Arthur corrected softly. "Do you honestly believe a mid-sized logistics firm can survive without government oversight and protection? Those missile components were bound for allied nations in Eastern Europe, Elena. Essential deterrence against foreign aggression. But the paperwork had to be buried to maintain plausible deniability."

"You used me," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper. "You turned me into a criminal accomplice without my knowledge."

"I turned you into a patriot," Arthur replied smoothly. "And now, you have a choice. You can keep running with Marcus and his rogue faction, or you can meet me at the federal plaza in one hour. We can clear your name, restore your life, and put this unfortunate misunderstanding behind us."

The line went dead with a sharp click. Before Elena could even process the ultimatum, a sleek black sedan pulled up beside her on the service road, the passenger window rolling down smoothly to reveal Marcus pointing a pistol right at her chest.
