Chapter 13 - The Betrayal of David Vance

Elena stared at her fiancé, the man she had planned a wedding with, the man who kissed her forehead every morning before she left for her compliance office. The world seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

"David?" she whispered, her voice cracking with profound shock and disbelief. "What... what are you doing here? Marcus said you were... you work for the DOJ!"

"I do work for the DOJ, honey," David said, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "I've been heading the internal compliance oversight division for three years. The same division that signed off on the GLS shipping manifests."

Elena staggered backward until her spine hit the kitchen counter. She looked from David to Marcus, who stood silently by the door with a grim, resigned expression on his face.

"You're working together," she breathed, the horrific realization washing over her in a tidal wave of betrayal. "All of it... the car mix-up, the apartment raid, the chase... it was all a staged performance to guide me right here."

"If we hadn't staged the threat, Elena, you never would have downloaded the master server keys from your office mainframe," David said, setting his coffee mug down with a sharp clink. "You were too cautious. You trusted the corporate structure too much. We needed you to panic, to run, and to pull the encrypted files out of cold storage so we could trace the offshore accounts back to their ultimate source."

"You used me as bait!" Elena screamed, the restrained emotions of the past twenty-four hours finally shattering into burning fury. "You risked my life! They shot at my apartment! They blew up a warehouse!"

"They are international arms traffickers, Elena!" David snapped back, his calm exterior cracking as he stepped forward. "We have been trying to penetrate Vanguard's inner circle for five years. They use shell companies and compliant auditors to launder military hardware shipments across international borders. You were the only person in the firm who noticed the weight discrepancies because you're the best auditor they've ever hired. We needed your expertise to crack the encryption key."

Before Elena could reply, the front windows of the ranch house exploded inward in a devastating storm of glass, lead, and screaming tactical alarms.
