Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

Heavy smoke filled the kitchen as automatic rifle fire tore through the exterior walls of the safehouse. David dove behind the kitchen island, drawing his service weapon and returning fire with practiced precision, while Marcus hauled Elena down onto the linoleum floor, shielding her body with his own.

"Vanguard tactical teams!" Marcus roared over the deafening din of gunfire. "They tracked the server keys the moment David plugged them into the local mainframe!"

"I didn't know they had a backend tracker on the keys!" David yelled, firing three rapid shots through the shattered remains of the living room window. "They must have updated the root certificates yesterday!"

"We have to get to the comms bunker under the floorboards!" Marcus shouted, kicking open a hidden wooden hatch beneath the kitchen table. "Move, Elena! Now!"

Elena scrambled backward into the dark, damp subterranean tunnel, her hands scraping against the rough concrete floor. David covered their retreat, emptying his magazine into the advancing shadows of the hallway before diving headfirst through the floor hatch just as a grenade landed with a dull thud in the kitchen above them.

The resulting explosion blew the roof off the ranch house, sending a shower of burning timber and insulation raining down across the clearing outside.

Down in the concrete bunker, the emergency generator kicked on with a sputtering hum, bathing the small underground room in harsh fluorescent light. David slammed the heavy steel bulkhead door shut and threw the locking wheel into place, sealing them inside just as heavy boots began to stomp on the concrete floor above them.

"This is the end of the line," David said, wiping soot and blood from his forehead as he slumped against the steel door. "The bunker doesn't have a secondary exit. When they cut through this door, it's over."

Elena stood in the center of the bunker, looking at the glowing computer console set against the back wall. The master server keys she had downloaded were still blinking on the primary monitor, ready to be transmitted to the international criminal tribunal in The Hague.

"It's not over," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm. She walked over to the keyboard, her fingers moving with absolute, cold precision.
