Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in the Swamp

The rusted metal cage of the freight elevator groaned as it descended deep into the subterranean levels of an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Elena stood shivering in her damp silk blouse, her black pants stained with soot and drywall dust. Marcus stood beside her, methodically cleaning the suppressor of his firearm with a small rag.
"Where are we?" Elena asked, her voice cracking with exhaustion.
"An old dry-dock facility owned by the Port Authority," Marcus said without looking up. "Before the budget cuts, this place was used to inspect cargo containers entering from international shipping lanes. Nobody comes here anymore."
"Except whoever is hunting us," Elena countered, sinking onto a wooden crate. "Marcus, I want answers. Who are those men? Why are they burning my life to the ground over a shipping manifest?"
Marcus snapped the slide of his weapon shut with a sharp, metallic click. He looked at her, his expression softening just a fraction. "Those men belong to a private intelligence contractor called Vanguard Security. They handle the dirty work for politicians who want to smuggle dual-use tech out of the country under the guise of agricultural imports."
"What kind of tech?" Elena asked, leaning forward.
"Guidance systems for long-range ballistic missiles," Marcus said flatly. "Disguised as automated grain-sorting equipment on paper. And your audit gave them the clean bill of health they needed to bypass federal customs inspections for the last three years."
Elena felt the room spin. "I didn't know. Arthur told me it was standard procedure. He said the Department of Commerce signed off on it digitally."
"Arthur was on their payroll," Marcus corrected her, walking over to a battered metal desk in the corner of the room. He plugged a secure thumb drive into an ancient laptop computer. "And when you started asking questions about the discrepancy in the weight logs three weeks ago, they decided you needed to be discredited, or eliminated."

The laptop screen flickered to life, displaying a live-feed security camera image of Elena’s own apartment building. A team of men in hazardous materials suits were systematically torching the entire floor with industrial accelerant.
