Chapter 9: The Ultimatum

Marcus answered the call with trembling fingers, pressing the phone tightly against his ear. Elena’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and entirely devoid of panic, sounding as though she were sitting in a quiet boardroom rather than orchestrating a multi-million-dollar heist. "You're playing a dangerous game, Marcus. Running around the city looking for pieces of paper that no longer exist is terribly inefficient," she said smoothly. Marcus demanded to know where the documents were, his voice low and dangerous. Elena laughed softly, a sound that cut through his resolve like a knife.
"The documents are currently being filed with the federal registrar, transferring ownership of all your corporate and personal assets to a shell corporation under my complete control," Elena explained, outlining her victory with chilling precision. "By sunrise, you and Cali will be legally penniless. But I am willing to offer a modest severance package, provided you drop all police inquiries and sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the events in the kitchen." Marcus gripped the metal railing of the vault walkway, his mind racing for an alternative angle. He realized she was bluffing about the filing time; federal registries required notarized physical signatures, which Cali had never provided for the final transfer.
"You don't have Cali’s signature, Elena, and without it, the transfer is nothing more than expensive toilet paper," Marcus retorted sharply. There was a brief pause on the line, the silence stretching uncomfortably before Elena’s tone hardened, losing its playful edge. "True, but signatures can be replicated with modern technology, and by the time forensic experts verify them, your company will be liquidated and your bank accounts frozen. You have until eight o'clock this morning to convince your wife to sign the quit-claim deed voluntarily, or I release the alternative footage—the one where your dear wife appears to initiate the physical altercation." The line went dead with a sharp click.
