Chapter 2

Flashing red and blue lights painted the white walls of the kitchen in erratic strokes, casting long, distorted shadows across the countertops. Paramedics moved with quiet, practiced efficiency, transferring Cali onto a gurney while attaching an oxygen mask to her face. Marcus stayed glued to her side, holding her limp hand despite her unconscious state, whispering reassurance that he hoped she could hear through the haze of pain. The medical team worked with a quiet urgency, asking rapid questions about the pregnancy, the trimester, and whether there had been any physical altercation before the fall. Marcus answered in clipped, tense sentences, his eyes darting across the room to find Elena standing by the kitchen island, quietly cooperating with a police officer who had just arrived at the scene.
Elena spoke in a low, even tone, gesturing gracefully toward the floor where her red high heels still sat untouched. She claimed she had arrived only moments before Marcus, finding Cali already collapsed and rushing to her aid rather than standing over her in triumph. Marcus stood up abruptly, ready to contest the lie, but a paramedic gently pulled him back, urging him to board the ambulance if he wanted to accompany Cali to the hospital. The conflict hung heavy in the air, a volatile tension that threatened to explode before the authorities could secure the premises. Marcus looked at Elena one last time before stepping into the back of the vehicle, his mind racing through the financial entanglements, the unspoken jealousies, and the hidden documents locked in his home office safe.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting off the chaotic sounds of the neighborhood, Marcus leaned over Cali’s stretcher. The heart monitor beeped at a steady, albeit fast, rhythm, offering a small anchor of hope in an otherwise chaotic world. He gently smoothed her dark hair away from her forehead, noticing a faint bruise beginning to form near her temple. It was an injury that flatly contradicted Elena’s innocent narrative of simply discovering a fallen friend. Marcus gripped his phone tightly, dialing a private investigator he had retained months earlier for corporate matters, realizing that protecting his family would require digging much deeper than a simple police report could ever hope to reach.
