Chapter 8: The Empty Vault

Marcus sprinted down the hospital stairs, ignoring the elevator, his boots echoing off the concrete walls as he burst through the exit doors into the chilly night air. He couldn't risk leaving Cali unprotected for long, but he knew that if Elena emptied the downtown vault, they would have no financial leverage left to fight the impending legal nightmare. He drove his car through the deserted city streets, breaking traffic laws in his haste to reach the financial district before dawn. The massive marble facade of the First National Bank loomed under the amber glow of streetlamps, silent and impenetrable to the casual observer.

Using his executive override credentials, Marcus bypassed the exterior security gates and gained access to the subterranean vault level. The security guard on duty looked up in surprise, but recognizing Marcus as a principal board member, offered no resistance as Marcus punched his security code into the biometric reader of private vault number 412. The heavy steel door swung open with a hydraulic hiss, revealing the rows of small metal lockboxes inside. He pulled out his key and unlocked box 412, pulling out the velvet-lined tray inside. It was empty. The original property deeds, the stock certificates, and the signed confession documents were completely gone.

Clutched at the bottom of the empty box was a single red high-heel charm made of polished metal—a mocking calling card left behind by someone who was always two steps ahead. Marcus slammed the metal drawer shut, his breath coming in ragged gasps as frustration and fury warred inside him. Elena hadn't just beaten him to the punch; she had anticipated his every move from the very beginning. He pulled out his phone to call Detective Miller, but before he could press dial, his phone screen lit up with an incoming video call from an encrypted satellite number that couldn't be traced.
