Chapter 3

The sterile scent of antiseptic dominated the waiting room on the third floor of the metropolitan hospital. Marcus paced the length of the linoleum floor, his black jacket unzipped, revealing the crumpled black shirt he had worn during his desperate dash across the kitchen. Every tick of the wall clock felt like a hammer blow against his nerves. He replayed the scene in his mind—the way Elena’s shoe had been positioned, the unnatural angle of Cali’s fall, and the eerie silence that greeted him when he first pushed open the double doors. The doctor finally emerged through the swinging double doors, peeling off a pair of latex gloves with a tired expression that made Marcus’s heart skip a beat.

Cali was stable, the doctor explained, speaking in a measured, empathetic voice. The blunt force trauma to her head was severe, but she had managed to regain brief consciousness before drifting back into a medically induced sleep to manage the pain. The baby’s heartbeat was strong, resilient against the trauma, though strict bed rest and continuous monitoring would be mandatory for the foreseeable future. Marcus felt a profound wave of relief wash over him, followed immediately by a hardening resolve. He thanked the physician and asked when he could see her. The doctor granted him five minutes, warning him not to tax her exhausted mind with too many questions about the incident just yet.

Entering the dimly lit recovery room, Marcus found Cali looking impossibly fragile against the crisp white pillows. Her eyes fluttered open as he sat in the chair beside the bed, her fingers weakly searching for his hand. She didn't speak, but a single tear traced the curve of her cheek, communicating a depth of fear and betrayal that words could never capture. Marcus leaned in close, pressing his lips to her knuckles. He promised her that Elena would never set foot in their home again and that the security footage was already being secured. At the mention of the camera, a flicker of panic crossed Cali’s face, her thumb pressing urgently into his palm, signaling that the danger went far beyond what had been captured on the kitchen tile.
