Chapter 1: The Kitchen Floor

The white kitchen floor felt freezing against Cali’s cheek, though she barely had the cognitive strength to register the temperature. Her fingers remained locked in a protective arc across her pregnant belly, an instinctual fortress built to shield the fragile life growing inside her. Above her, the hum of the modern refrigerator and the relentless red pulse of the ceiling security camera formed a surreal rhythm. Marcus was shouting her name, his voice cracking with a terrifying blend of panic and disbelief as he crossed the pristine tiles. His boots skidded slightly on the polished surface before he dropped to his knees, his hands hovering over her shoulders, afraid to move her yet desperate to offer comfort.

Elena stood just a few feet away, her maroon cowl-neck midi dress catching the bright overhead light. Her red high heels were positioned precariously close to Cali’s outstretched arm, a stark splash of crimson against the clinical white expanse. Elena’s chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths, her wide eyes locked on Marcus as he looked up from Cali’s pale face. The accusation in Marcus’s eyes was immediate, sharp as broken glass. He didn't ask what happened; his posture demanded an explanation, his jaw tight with suppressed rage. Elena raised a trembling hand defensively, her lips parting to offer a frantic excuse before she instinctively glanced upward at the tiny blinking red light of the security lens mounted quietly in the corner of the ceiling.

Marcus didn't wait for her defense. He pulled out his phone with a shaking hand, dialing emergency services while keeping his gaze fixed entirely on Elena, warning her silently not to take another step. The silence in the spacious room grew suffocating, punctuated only by Cali’s shallow, ragged breathing and the automated voice of the emergency dispatcher ringing through the speaker. Elena slowly lowered her hand, her expression shifting from immediate shock to a cold, calculated composure that sent a chill down Marcus’s spine. He knew this kitchen. He knew the security system recorded every second of audio and video, storing it on a remote server that couldn't be easily wiped. That camera was their silent witness, holding the absolute truth of what had transpired in the ten minutes before he burst through the double doors.
