Chapter 9 - The International Wire

Margaret stopped just outside the private boardroom doors, the sleek glass and steel hallway stretching out in both directions. She pulled the smartphone from her cream handbag, her fingers steady as she swiped to answer the video call.
The screen flickered, illuminating her sophisticated face in the dim light of the corridor. A grainy, pixelated image resolved into view, showing a lavish, sun-drenched penthouse overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
Sitting on a white leather sofa was a woman with cascading blonde hair, wrapped in a silk bathrobe, holding a half-empty glass of champagne. It was Vanessa—Julian’s secret offshore mistress, whom he had been funding through hidden corporate subsidiaries for over three years.
“Julian, darling, finally!” Vanessa purred into her phone camera, swirling the champagne. “I’ve been trying to call you all morning! The concierge in Monaco just told me my platinum cards are all declining, and the yacht lease agency is threatening to tow the vessel! What is going on back there? Did your mother die or something?”
Margaret did not speak immediately. She let the silence stretch across the thousands of miles of ocean separating them, watching the confusion slowly creep across the younger woman’s pampered face.
Vanessa leaned closer to her phone screen, squinting at the display. “Wait... who are you? Where is Julian? Why is an old woman answering his phone?”
“Julian is currently residing in a federal holding facility, my dear,” Margaret said, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly devastating.
Vanessa froze, the champagne glass halting halfway to her lips. “What? Who is this? This isn't funny! If this is one of Julian’s pranks—”
“It is no prank, Miss Vance,” Arthur Pendelton said, stepping up beside Margaret and leaning into the frame of the front-facing camera. “I am Arthur Pendelton, general counsel for Sterling Global Holdings. All foreign accounts, shell corporations, and luxury assets purchased under Julian Sterling’s secondary directives have been frozen under federal warrant and corporate asset recovery laws.”
Vanessa dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the white marble floor of the Monaco penthouse, sending golden liquid spraying across the expensive rug.
“No!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice pitching up in pure panic. “That money is mine! Julian promised me that penthouse! He said the corporate fund was a permanent trust!”
“Julian lied to you, just as he lied to his board, his wife, and his mother,” Margaret replied coldly. “The penthouse lease was terminated thirty minutes ago. Local authorities have already been notified to repossess the yacht.”
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa screamed, tears of absolute rage spilling down her painted cheeks. “I’ll ruin you! I know things about Julian’s overseas transactions! I have encrypted backups of every wire transfer!”
Margaret smiled faintly—a tight, humorless expression that didn't reach her eyes.
“Please give those backups to the local authorities, Vanessa,” Margaret said calmly. “It will save the FBI the trouble of searching your hard drives when they arrive at your door in twenty minutes.”
Margaret ended the call, cutting the video feed with a single tap of her thumb. She slipped the phone back into her handbag and turned to Arthur.
“Has the courier arrived at my residence?” Margaret asked.
“Yes, Mrs. Sterling,” Arthur replied, his expression grave. “The final package from the safety deposit box has been delivered to your study. Exactly as you requested.”

Margaret nodded slowly. “Good. Let us go home. There is one final visitor waiting for us on the front porch.”
