Chapter 2 - The Sound of Closing Doors

The heavy oak door drifted wider, casting long, fractured shadows across the marble foyer. Julian rose from his seat, his napkin tumbling forgotten onto the floor. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Chloe stood up beside him, her sparkly gown whispering against the chair legs. “Who are they? Julian, what is going on here?” she demanded, her voice losing its previous venom, replaced by a sharp, rising panic.

Agent Vance, a tall man with piercing eyes and a charcoal suit, stepped across the threshold without an invitation. He held up a leather-bound badge that caught the harsh light of the crystal chandelier.

“Mr. Julian Sterling?” Vance’s voice was flat, devoid of any professional warmth. “I am Special Agent Vance, Federal Financial Crimes Division. We have a warrant to freeze all domestic and offshore assets linked to your name, effective immediately.”

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. “There has been some mistake. My mother—Margaret Sterling—she controls the primary trust, but I am the sole heir. This platinum card in my hand is backed by billions. Look at it!”

“We have looked at it, Mr. Sterling,” Vance replied, stepping further into the dining room. “Your mother didn’t just freeze your trust. She filed an emergency forensic audit alleging systematic embezzlement, corporate tax fraud, and unauthorized liquidation of Sterling Global Holdings.”

Chloe gasped, clutching her pearls just as Margaret used to wear them. “Fraud? That’s impossible! We live off family dividends! Julian, tell them this is a sick joke your mother is playing to humiliate us!”

Julian looked down at his phone. The crimson notification was gone, replaced by a permanent system lockout. Every banking app he tapped opened to a blank screen with a single, brutal word: REJECTED.

“She did this,” Julian whispered, the full weight of his betrayal crushing his lungs. “She actually locked us out.”

Agent Vance signaled to the two agents behind him. They didn't draw weapons, but their posture was absolute, immovable. “Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling, you are both requested to remain on the premises. Federal marshals are securing the perimeter. No one leaves.”

Chloe stared at the agents, then glared at her husband. “Do something!” she shrieked.

Before Julian could answer, his phone rang with an unknown ID. He answered with trembling fingers.

“Julian,” Margaret’s voice was calm, chillingly composed. “You forgot who built the table you were eating at. Pack your bags. You have until midnight before the house is repossessed.”

The line went dead, leaving only the deafening hum of the refrigerator.
