Chapter 8 - The Net Tightens

The elevator doors slid open with a sharp mechanical hiss, revealing a half-dozen armed federal marshals in full tactical gear, led by Special Agent Vance. They didn't rush, but their movement was an inescapable wave of authority.

“Victor Vance,” Agent Vance called out clearly, his hand resting on the holster of his sidearm as he stepped into the boardroom. “Step away from the table. Put your hands behind your back.”

Victor spun around, his face twisting in rage. “You have no jurisdiction here! I am a registered stakeholder in three major municipal boards! You can’t just walk in here and—”

“We have a federal warrant signed by a district judge twenty minutes ago,” Agent Vance interrupted, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket and holding it up. “Conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate bribery, and money laundering tied directly to Sterling Global’s unauthorized liquidation accounts.”

Victor looked from the federal agent to Arthur Pendelton, and finally back to Margaret, who was calmly sipping a glass of water. The trap had not been sprung today; it had been laid carefully over the past three years, waiting for the exact moment the rats tried to devour the house.

“You set us all up,” Victor whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of hatred and profound shock. “You played the frail, grieving widow while you fed us just enough rope to hang ourselves.”

Margaret set her glass down on the mahogany table with a soft, precise clink.

“I am a grieving widow, Victor,” Margaret replied, her voice steady and chillingly polite. “My husband built this company to provide for families, not to fund your daughter’s vanity and your political bribes. You mistook my sorrow for weakness. That was your final mistake.”

Agent Vance nodded to the marshals. Two officers stepped forward, grabbing Victor by both arms. The private security guards Victor had brought with him reached instinctively for their weapons, but stopped instantly as three more federal agents aimed their rifles directly at their chests.

“Don't even think about it,” Agent Vance warned quietly. “Stand down.”

Victor’s guards slowly raised their empty hands, stepping back against the wood-paneled walls.

As the cold steel handcuffs clicked around Victor’s wrists, he glared across the room at Julian. “You cowardly little parasite! You sold us out to save your own skin!”

Julian didn't look at Victor. He stared at the floor, his shoulders shaking as the reality of what he had destroyed finally crashed down upon him. He had wealth, power, a beautiful home, and a legacy handed to him on a silver platter—and he had gambled it all away for arrogance and greed.

“Take them away,” Agent Vance ordered.

The marshals escorted Victor and his men out of the boardroom, their heavy boots echoing down the long hallway until the doors swung shut once more, leaving the room in a heavy, suffocating silence.

Elena sat frozen in her executive chair, staring at the signed contract in front of her. The reality of her new position—and the immense danger that came with it—was only now setting in.

Margaret turned her gaze from the empty doorway to Elena, offering a small, reassuring nod. Then, she stood up from her chair, gathered her cream-colored handbag, and walked toward the private exit.

“Where are you going, Mrs. Sterling?” Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Margaret paused at the door, looking back over her shoulder with a faint, enigmatic smile.

“To visit my son's new apartment, Elena,” Margaret said softly. “It’s time to pack up the remaining boxes.”

Before Elena could ask what that meant, Margaret’s smartphone buzzed violently in her hand with an incoming video call from an unrecognized international number.
