Chapter 3 - The Empty Vaults

The silence in the dining room felt heavier than the marble pillars supporting the mansion. Chloe paced across the imported Persian rug, the sequins of her evening gown catching the dimming lights like angry fireflies.
“Call her back!” Chloe hissed, jabbing a manicured finger toward Julian’s chest. “Tell her we’ll apologize! Tell her whatever she wants to hear! I have a gala in Paris next weekend, and my boutique credit lines are already declining!”
Julian stared blankly at his phone screen. The battery indicator flickered, but the screen remained locked on the federal audit notice. The platinum card in his hand felt heavy, like a piece of dead lead.
“It won't work, Chloe,” Julian said, his voice hollow. “You don't know my mother. When Margaret Sterling draws a line, she doesn't erase it. She paves over it.”
Agent Vance walked back into the room, holding a sleek black tablet. He didn't look at them with anger, only with the tedious boredom of a man who had seen rich people lose everything a thousand times before.
“Mr. Sterling, our preliminary sweep of the main accounts just finished,” Vance stated, tapping the glass screen. “It appears the primary holding company was emptied forty-eight hours ago. Transferred into a blind philanthropic trust managed by a private executor.”
Julian’s head snapped up. “Emptied? That’s impossible! Those funds were earmarked for my expansion projects!”
“They were earmarked for orphanages and medical research across the globe,” Vance corrected coldly. “Your mother signed the transfer documents herself this morning at her attorney's office. Legally, you don't even own the car parked in the driveway.”
Chloe screamed, a genuine, high-pitched shriek of pure rage and disbelief. “Everything? The penthouse in Manhattan? The yacht in Monaco? Gone?!”
“Gone,” Vance confirmed. “And furthermore, our financial analysts have flagged a series of suspicious wire transfers originating from your personal login credentials. Moving corporate capital into high-risk cryptocurrency wallets registered in the Cayman Islands.”
Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face. He took a staggering step backward, his hip hitting the edge of the mahogany dining table. “That... that was just a hedge. A temporary loan to cover my private debts. It wasn't meant to be permanent!”
“Tell it to a federal judge, Mr. Sterling,” Vance said, gesturing to the agents at the door. “Put your hands behind your back.”
Julian froze, looking at the silver handcuffs glinting in the chandelier light.
Chloe backed away from him in sheer terror, her sparkly gown rustling loudly in the quiet room. “Don’t touch me,” she whispered, her eyes wide. “I had nothing to do with his offshore accounts. I’m just his wife!”
Vance looked at her with sharp skepticism. “We’ll verify your tax returns, Mrs. Sterling. Until then, you are an accessory to financial conspiracy.”

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, the front door swung open again, revealing Margaret standing in the entryway, watching her son’s downfall with eyes as cold as winter stone.
