Chapter 6 - The New Heir

The morning sun filtered through the tall, arched windows of the Sterling Global boardroom, casting long, golden beams across the polished mahogany table where the board of directors sat in terrified silence. No one dared to touch the imported coffee cups. No one dared to check their phones.

At the head of the table sat Margaret Sterling. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer over a silk blouse, her pearl earrings catching the morning light. To her right sat Arthur Pendelton, holding a fresh stack of legal documents.

The heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open slowly.

A young woman walked in. She wore a simple, dark blue business suit that was clean but clearly off-the-rack. Her dark hair was tied back in a neat, practical ponytail, and her hands were slightly rough at the knuckles—the hands of someone who worked for a living, not someone who traded stocks on a whim.

It was Elena Vance—no relation to the federal agent—formerly a night-shift logistics coordinator at the downtown shipping depot that Julian had scheduled for demolition.

“Come in, Elena,” Margaret said, her voice carrying an unusual warmth that the board had never heard directed at Julian in his entire life.

Elena hesitated, standing by the door as if expecting someone to tell her she was in the wrong room. “Mrs. Sterling. Are you... are you sure about this? I’m just a logistics clerk. I don't know the first thing about running a global corporation.”

“Neither did my son, Elena, but he had the arrogance to pretend he did,” Margaret replied smoothly. “You know every driver, every warehouse supervisor, and every broken promise this company made to the working class over the past decade. You have integrity. That is something money cannot buy, and it is the only asset this company has lacked for twenty years.”

Arthur slid a thick parchment document across the mahogany table toward her. “Sign here, Miss Vance. As of 8:00 AM today, by executive fiat of the primary stakeholder, you are the majority shareholder and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global Holdings.”

The board members gasped in unison. Several elderly men in expensive suits leaned forward, their faces flushing with indignation.

“This is an outrage!” shouted Director Henderson, slamming his hand on the table. “An unverified warehouse clerk taking over a multi-billion-dollar enterprise?! Where is Julian?! We demand to speak with the legal heir!”

Margaret didn't blink. She slowly turned her head toward Henderson, her eyes narrowing into cold, glittering daggers.

“Julian is currently residing in a federal holding facility answering charges of embezzlement and financial fraud, Henderson,” Margaret stated, her voice dropping to a dangerous register. “If you speak another word out of turn, I’ll have Arthur audit your pension fund as well. Would you like to test that theory?”

Henderson swallowed hard, instantly sinking back into his leather chair, staring down at his blotter.

Elena walked slowly toward the head of the table. Her fingers trembled slightly as she picked up the heavy silver fountain pen Arthur offered her. She looked at Margaret, searching the older woman’s eyes for any sign of a cruel joke.

“Why me?” Elena whispered.

“Because when my husband built this company, he built it with people who sweat for their bread, not people who sneered at it,” Margaret answered softly. “Make us proud, Elena.”

Elena took a deep breath, pressed the pen to the paper, and signed her name in bold, steady strokes.

As the ink dried, the intercom on the wall buzzed sharply.

Arthur pressed the talk button. “Report.”

A frantic security guard’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Mr. Pendelton, we have a major security breach at the front lobby. Someone just bypassed the federal cordon and is demanding entry to the executive suite.”

Margaret frowned. “Who?”

May you like

“It’s Chloe’s father,” the guard replied breathlessly. “And he brought armed private security.”
