Chapter 7: The Gathering Threat

Peace, however, is rarely allowed to blossom without being tested by the frost.
The following Monday, Liam received an official summons from the Superior Family Court. The Van Der Bilt family had filed a petition for temporary custodial review, citing Liam’s ""unstable personal decisions"" and requesting that Maya be placed under the legal guardianship of her grandmother Victoria.
In the executive boardroom of his architectural practice, Liam met with his primary legal counsel, Sarah Sterling.
""They are weaponizing Maya’s previous silence, Liam,"" Sarah warned, spreading the psychiatric affidavits across the conference table. ""Victoria has retained Dr. Sterling, an aggressive custody evaluator. They intend to argue that your neglect and refusal to place Maya in an accredited private academy is impairing her psychological development.""
""They want to take my daughter because I refused to let them turn her into a trophy,"" Liam said, his fists clenched against the mahogany surface.
""In family court, perception carries enormous weight,"" Sarah said candidly. ""They will put Maya on the witness stand in judge's chambers. If she clams up and refuses to speak—if she retreats into mutism—the judge may rule that she needs institutionalized residential therapy.""
Liam felt a cold terror seize his chest. The thought of his fragile little girl being locked in an elite residential facility, surrounded by strangers and clinical evaluations, made him want to tear down the city with his bare hands.
