Chapter 10: Maya’s Melody

The side door opened, and Maya stepped into the courtroom.

She wore her simple cream dress, holding her canvas satchel tightly against her chest. She looked small against the towering walnut paneling and high ceilings, but her steps were steady.

Victoria leaned forward, offering a sweet, theatrical smile. ""Maya, darling, come to Grandmother. Tell the judge you want to come to the big house.""

Maya stopped in the center of the aisle. She did not look at Victoria. She looked over at Liam, whose eyes were filled with unconditional, fierce love, and then at Clara, who gave her a small, reassuring nod.

Maya reached into her satchel. She did not pull out a legal affidavit; she pulled out a small, folded sheet of drawing paper and a polished wooden kalimba.

She walked directly up to the witness stand, standing on her tiptoes to place the drawing on the judge's high bench.

Judge Vance leaned forward, adjusting her spectacles. The drawing depicted a small house surrounded by giant trees of stained glass. In the center were three figures holding hands: a tall man with blueprints, a woman with a violin, and a little girl singing notes that turned into birds.

At the bottom, written in neat, earnest handwriting, were the words:

*My Daddy never made me be quiet. He waited for me to sing.*

Maya placed her thumbs on the kalimba. In the dead silence of the courtroom, she struck four clear, resonant notes—the melody of the rain song.

Then, she looked directly into the judge's eyes and spoke in a clear, unbroken voice that echoed off the high ceiling:

May you like

""I don't want to live in a house where people only talk about money, Your Honor. I want to live where my Daddy listens to the music.""
